Shee ne baufingasthev had from the start. A seco nd covered the four at .quarter di stance. Suddenl y, on lap ten , Roberts turned up the wic k. As Spencer got th e Honda sideway s for a bo u t th e on ly time in the 32 laps, Ro berts raised th e trackside d irt as he too k th e . lead for the first time. As Spe ncer sorted hi mse lf o ut, h e was relegated to th ir d as de termined Sh een e went thro ugh . The lea di ng quartet made an irnpressive sight as they thun dered noseto- tai l ro und th e sweepi ng right· ha nder in front of a lake with Buen os Aires skyscrapers as a backdrop. The pace was as hot as the su n wa s blistering. And all th is time, Lucchinelli was lu rkin g 15 yards down in fou rth a n d Mamola was closi ng and brin gin g Uncini with h im . Wit h ten la ps to go, Mamola was o ut . Overh eating problems slightly slowed Lucchinelli, who was passed by Uncini, With five laps to go , Spencer dipped out in overtaking backrnarkers and lost th e tow he had been getting down th e straight. So he sudden ly lost 50 yards -- too much in that co m pany in that form. Now it wa s down to two , th ough Spencer never gave up and did pull some yards back. For th e la st few laps. Sh eene had attacked Ro bert s. Britain vs. USA. Michel in vs. Dun lop, It was good stu ff. Sheene lost out a fraction la pping Bra zil' s Anton io Grecco at the chicane. But Ro bert s had an even nearer miss, Going int o the first gear lefthander near the paddock, Grecco cut into Ro berts' path. Ro bert s deftly dropped u nder him and sh o uldered h im up the sliproad. Mr . Grecco conti nued to finis h 20th and last. The Rober ts-Sheene battle continued unabated. Roberts kn ew where Sheene wan ted to pass and bloc ked his route. No one was going to outbrake i'Roberts at the fin al chicane. He left h is braking despera tely late to win by three-fifths of a second. Sheene's last la p was h is quickest -only .8s slower than Roberts' quickest lap of th e race. Gain ing a ll th e time. Spencer was only a furth er three-fifths of a secon d beh ind Sh een e a t the end of one of the great 500 G Ps .- just lik e last year's West German a t H ock enheim. Said Spencer: " When I lost their dr aft on th e long st raigh t; that made th e differen ce." Shee ne, who had fitted th e h ard est brak e pads avai la ble, had th e fro nt brake lever go ba ck to th e bar toward th e end. It was a happier Sh een e in Buen os Air es; dete rmined , better eq u ip ped by Yamaha, a nd trying desperately hard throughout p ractice a nd racing. H e told lo cal journalists h e could win the World Championship if he got a good result in Argentina. He's got the result! Befor e the race, many p u ndits reckoned Ro bert s for th e 12-round championsh ip but co uld n' t ma ke up their minds on an Arg entine winner . . It turned out to be Ro bert s. H e upped the pace toward the end with lap 26 his quickest. He felt he was on con tro l.
