Elmer triples at Sturgis mot-sno-cross By Brian George STURGIS, SO, AP R . 4 South Dako ta kicked off its new 1982 State Motocross Championship Series today with another grand open ing at hand. the reopeni ng o f one of th e Midwest's finest motocross courses, Sturgis Raceway. Although the track was in superb condition due to the hard efforts of the Ra p id City Mororcycle Club, headed by Bob Bai ley and Deryk Ward. an incoming storm off the coast of Oregon and Washington moved in and blasted the openi ng round with nearly two inches of snow between th e second and 10th races. Temperatures all morning had held steadily below the freezing point. but th e riders elected to go for it out o n the course and see how it all would go, and up until th e heavy onslaught of snowflakes, th e action had been pretty hot. About the only major problem was th e fact that nylon motocross gloves offer little to zero protection against the cold. and aft er 10 hard laps. many of the competitors ca me off the track totall y paralyzed in the hands and fingers. Despite good 01' Ma Nature's rather uncertain disposition, Minnesota's Todd Elmer made the trek westward a nd proceeded to b litz the three Pro classes a lmost as badly as the wea ther. Elmer led the 125,250 and Open Pros across the checkered fla g in each of the first motos of the three classes, and when the overa lls were posted afte r the firs t round due to the weather-shortened day, Elmer walked off with a triple victory for half of the usua l effort. Mike Friend was the only rider to keep Elmer from flat destroying the 125 and 250cc divisions and gave the " ' . I '. I. , . .. . . Kawasaki ace h is only stiff competition of the afternoon. One-two-five Pros were the first out of th e gate, a n d a fter two pileups, one in the first turn a nd th e o ther a couple hundred yards down th e tra ck , a restart wa s ca lled. a nd Elmer h ad to relinquish an a lready steady lead . On th e restart, Ben Norfolk gra bbed th e h oleshot with Elmer in tow , while Fri en d a nd Kevin Zeal followed . Elm er qui ckl y began to work on Norfolk and slip ped into th e lead. From th ere. h e pulled away for the fir st half of th e ra ce and went unchallenged despite a lat e charge from Friend. Fri end had motored h is Honda behind Norfolk for a number of laps, then after working past the Yamaha la te in th e rnoto, found himself wi th too Ii ul e time to cat ch Elmer, although h e did close the gap considerably. Norfolk h eld on for third ahead of Zeal and Tom Peters to round out the top five at the flag. In 250cc action , life was not so easy for Elmer. Friend took the ea rly lead whi le Elmer worked past Dave Molder to get into second. From there. it was a cat-and-mouse chase for five laps. as Friend did everything he possibly could to hold Elmer at bay . All of his efforts still fell short, and Elmer made a la te charge that put him past Friend with little time left for the Honda to retaliate. Elmer went on to win number two with Friend again second, Molder holding onto third and Joren Boyce lead in g Bill Matthews across the fouth. Elmer rounded out hi s triple victory with the Open Pros. Although second out of the gate, Elmer quickly motored out into the lead, and from there went on to build another commanding lead and take it to the checkers for the win. Kevin Poole took his Suzuki into second ahead of Ja y La ndstrom, Jay Leal and Mike Shurman. O ne of the best races of the day came in the Senior division, as Bill Huntin g to n , Bob Ba iley a nd Bill Stork set up a three-rider ba tt le the first ha lf o f the moto tha t ended with cra shes to two of th em . Hunti ngto n gra bbe d the early lead with Bailey drop pi ng to second after ta ki ng the h ol esh o r, w hile Bill Stork worked his 490 Yamaha into third and began to pressure the leading duo. For three laps it was nip and tuck, but Huntington held firm , a nd Bailey refused to let Stork by. Finally, on a gnarly, slick uphi ll. Stork tried an in side pass on Bailey: but his Open mount grabbed too much power on too little tra ction . a nd Stork slipped instantly to the d irt. This left Bailey all alone to work on Huntington. which he did for two more laps, then slid his Rice Cy£l e Honda into the lead. Soon after, Huntington went down in his bid to retake first and allowed Bail ey to motor off with the eas y victory from there. while Fred Sletten, Butch Evink and Jerry Mladder al so overtook Huntington before th e checkers flew . • Results 125 PRO: 1.
