ing a Yamaha for Team AWO L, wheeling his way into third. When the finish line finally loomed into sight. Felger led the battle-worn troops home. Stranger came home to second overall honors and Underwood came across in th ird. Tarling, who had changed positions at every turn along the way, settled into fourth. Richard Pog ue turned his red hot Open Honda loose Sunday morning and quite simply stole the show in the Open Novices. He had to fight for his win. but Pogue was storming! He moved into the lead from sixth place at the end of the first lap. Pogue had his work cut out for him with heavy action from the rear. Yamaha mounted Brian Sanders was on the gas in second and fighting to hold at bay a monstrous pack. John Stapleton. a proud memberofTeam Squid, was pushing his way through the crowd and soon found himself locked into a do-or-die duel with Pogue for command. With approximate lap times of 17 minutes. 25 seco nds, Pogue was burning up the track. He soon established a three minute lead over Stapleton in second. who in turn was keeping two minutes ahead of Daniel W h ite in third. White, in true fashion, was three minutesahead of Sanders, rounding out the top four. When the white flag was whipped out, the spectators were bouncing orr the pit walls. White, now up to second, was 30 seconds away from taking home the gold and pushed Pogue relentlessly down the home stretch. Stapleton had fought valiantly and finished th e day with third overall honors in a race, beset with mechanical fatalities. The final duel of the weekend, the 250cc and Open Experts and Sidehacks, brought the crowd to its feet for th e tighest duel of the year. Craig Adams, riding for North County Honda, fought tooth and nail against Dan Ashcraft. a crafty desert racer riding a Husqvarna for Pro Circuit. These two men kept the .cro wd in suspense from wire to wire, switching the lead back and fourth through most of their 100-mile encounter. Adams and Ashcraft, locked into a handlebar clashing and wheel banging duel throughout their first lap, continued to try and outfox each other over every inch of the terra in. The pack they left behind were taking the course two and three abreast. Absolute insanity! Into the third lap, Ashcraft slipped a wheel under Adams and held command by the skin of his teeth down to the end of the day. With average lap times of 15 minutes, these two were flat out over unbelievable terrain. When the checkered flag brought an end to the madness, Ash craft came home victorious, Adams followed close behi nd for second. Lee Scheffers, out of Hemet Cycle Center, had fought to catch both Ashcraft and Adams and emerged in third with Bill Tarling, back after a superb ride Saturday, cinching fourth ahead of Dan Smith in fifth. As for the Sidehacks, who had to share the sa me track wi th Ashcraft and Adams, they had a rough go of it . The Tom and Scott Whitney team aimed their 1000 Harley-Davidson down the straights a nd deep into the turns, leading for the first five laps, then running into trouble. Ralph J . Whitney and Perry Melillo edged their 850 Norton/Wasp up through the pack and into the lead by the end of the day . Several of the sidehacks had wheel problems, such as having them turn sideways or come of f a ltogether. Whitney and Mel illo ran strong and emerged triumphant. followed by Les Ketcham, Jr. and Kenny Mcintyre in second with the pairing of Ron Hall and Ro bin T. Dickson rounding out the top three runners.• C\I NATIONAL MOTOSPORT ASSOCIATION GRAND NATIONAL C PIONSHIP SERIES NORTHWEST . NORTHCENTRAL 4·3 Woodland. Wo . 51 Roubu'g .O r.
