·Canada· Northern California·Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-AI The Pro classes were not large enough to run qualifiers; the 125cc Pro class had 22 riders, which fit the gate exactl y. The Open Pros had 20 contestants, a n d 250cc Pro was th e largest at 26 riders , which required a two-row start. In moto one of the 125cc Pro clas, Thornton put his Yamaha into the lead at the start over Arne H ellman (Su per Seer/Newburg Hon ), Cory Klaudt, Brett Tremblay (Su z of Spokane), Richard Earle (L O P/ Su per Seer /Han ) and Duane Marker (Ya m support). Thornton wasted very little time moving out front while Klaudt moved by H euman to m ove into th e second position over H enman, Tremblay a nd Diesso . By the halfway point in th e race, Thornton was sailing all alon e out front o f Klaudt, who had se cond all to himself. Tremblay opened up a gap as well between himself and fourth pl a ce D iess o. Marker finished fifth , foll ow ed by a trio of riders co nsisti ng of Lance Richotte (Suz), Brad Balmes (Ya m) and Hellman . Eighth place is th e final pa y slo t in each moto, and it's surprising how th ese guys will go at it. Klaudt was thinking of the first place payoff when th e gate dropped for moto two. Klaudt romped to a n immediate lead with fellow Honda rider Herrman in second and Marker third. Thornton held down fourth and wa s having troubl e getting around Marker to go after Hellman. Thornton did get by event ua ll y, but by the midway point in th e race, Klaudt had opened up a six-second lead over Di esso . Thornton joined th e front-runners, but it didn 't seem to bother Diesso and Klaudt who were bar to bar for th e last few laps. Thornton seemed to be co nten t with third . Diesso made a last-ditch attempt at taking th e lead, but it backfired and nearly sent Danny down . Diesso did sav e it to tak e seco n d . Thornton third , Marker fourth , Balmes fifth , Ri chotte sixth and H ellman seventh after a cra sh set him ba ck . Diesso was O Ul to make a name for himself and launched himself to instant glory, leading th e 250cc Pros o ver David H enden (Ya m), Canadian Tim Krugh (Ha n), SCali T yler (Ma i NW ) a n d G ary Kuest (Su pe r Seer / Airway H eights Yam ). T yler took Diesso for th e lead o n lap two on th e long downhill while H enden, Krugh an d Burgett gave chase. Burgett closed in on T yler by th e midway point , going around H enden for second. wh o just as soo n dropped it , purring Diesso back in third. Diesso moved to cha llen ge Burgett. but " T he Lumberjack " held his own to the flag . Tyler took th e win , though . Fourth went (a Tom Moen (Sea ttle Yam ), Roby Bass (Spokan e Han ) fifth an d jack McGill (Ya m) sixth. Second moto had Diesso aga in grab the lea d over Tyler, Krugh, Bass, Henden and Burgett, Tyler took over on the n ext go around while Bass and Krugh traded paint behind. Burgett moved to second to put pressure on Tyler, but Burgett's bike threw a chain and went DNF. Ty ler was havinga picnic up front and getting paid quite we ll in th e process. Diesso made a cha rge that brought him to within striking distance of Tyler, but the Tacoma terror held on to take the win. Third went . to Krug h , Bass fourth, H enden fifth, Moen sixth and Brett Tr emblay (Spokane Suz) seventh. The Open Pro class was a real seat edger. Burgert was hungry for a piece of th e $1 ,000 per clas s loot a nd made a move out of the gate. Bill joyce (L O P/ Burien Suz), who hasn't ridden in a year, brought out a n ew Floater to take th e lead awa y from Burgett and pull a way from th e pack in th e ea rly going. Trailing in second was Don Gores (O lym p ic Yam ) and Burgett. Gores a nd Joyce were hav ing a supe r battle out front until joyce crept a way from th e two. Mantey Mitchell (KT M support ) W .lS having it out with Burgett and Roby Bass (Han) . Burgett stalled, dropping to fifth , but just a s soon as you cou ld blink an eye , he wa s back into third . Gores made a move on joyce for th e lead but instead ended up with a fa ce full of sa nd . joyce faded in th e lat e go ing a llowi n g Burge tt to ge t by. j oyce held on to seco nd to the flag with Krugh taking third. Fourth went to Moen , T ed Devol (Devo l Eng. KTM ) finished fifth rer lowed by Brian Doyle (Ma i) and Mit chell. Mota two had joyce once aga in jump into th e lead foll owed by T yler a nd Burgett, who in one lap reeled th e Suzuki rider in . Burgett and T yler again went at it for th e lead. Tyler wou ld keep it open longer than th e National vet . but the Yamaha rider has more experience than th e 16year-old Maico star. joyce held down third and motored all a lo ne in the position until Moen a nd Krugh caught up to th e tiring LOP rider. joyce yielded to both Moen and then Krugh , dropping to fifth . Krugh got by Moen with a valiant pa ss in the straight stretch launching pad, which was a jump taken in fifth gear. Some riders, like BurgeII, Kuest a nd Ros s Learn (Ya m) , logged nearly enoug h fli ght time to receive th eir pilot 's license. Burgett didn 't buckl e under pressure and held T yler a t ba y to tak e th e ca ke. Third went to Kru gh. fourth Moen . Don Knoblauch (Ya m) mo tored a ro u nd si len tly swoo p in g up rid ers, taking j oyce o n th e la st lap for fifth. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Rick Burgett (Vam); 2. Timmy Krugh (Hon); 3 .
