AZ, MAR . 21 The fir st points-paying race of Can yon Raceway's 1982 sh ort tra ck and TT season came off with good action and was both ' enjoyabl e and exciting. Craig rips CMMC Minis, Dunlap dominates J25s at Sarona Jim Tarantino won two classes at CMC's Saddleback MX. Dan Mullins was th e big winner of th e day with wins in three cla sses. Mullins dealt defeat to Mik e Stewart a nd Donn ie Norman in th e 250cc Expert short track. Norman had a fierce battle for his third pl ace finish. H e had 10 fend off th e cha rges of T om Burch am. Bob Russell and Marlow Pa rks were the com pe titio n in the Open short tra ck, but Mullins aga in took the win. Mull in s put his name on th e 250cc Expert TT, a lso. He took the win ahead of Bur cham and Rick Williams. Parks took th e lead early in the Open Expert TT and never gave it up. Russell and Pat An to n ides fol lowed him home. Butch Odom, Ric Crandall , Virgil Zumstein, Bob H in chliff and Buck Burcham rode whee l to wh eel for the entire sh ort track main for Open Amat eurs. Hinchliff took th e overa ll ah ead of Od om a nd Bur cham. Gary Boyd and Randy jacobs ran it back and forth for the entire 250cc Novice sho rt track ma in with Boyd tak in g th e first spot, jacobs second a nd Aaron Eu stace ro u ndi ng out th e top three. Four-year- old Reid Beggs ran a lon ely race in th e Y-Zinger class, as did Danny Yogerst in th e Pee Wee class, but in th e Mini class, competi tion wa s 'toug h for Syd Ni chols and Todd Yogerst., Yogerst grabbed th e overa lls in both th e Mini short track a nd TT. T he one daya ffa ira ttracted over 200 partici pants a nd a dece nt crowd of spectators. The race was held 0!1 th e o ld Ol ympia d track due to th e was ho u t of the Internati onal track da ys before. The DG spo nso red event had prizes fo r a ll cla sses incl ud ing a rather large purse for the profession al .en tra n ts. As th e morning su n began to warm th e Saddleback ai r, the riders ga zed a t the even t line up showing it was going 10 be a long da y: 22 rnotos, including two six-lap q ualifi ers for th e 250cc P ros. Thirty-two of them would transfer to the main event, th e last mot os of the da y. The two qual ifyin g heats hit th e mo ist tra ck right o ff th e bat a nd the racing was hot off the start. Sco tt Manning (Yam ) led the field to th e "bank" but as the shor t rnoto progr essed , factor y Suzuki rid er Brad La ckey quickened the pace. But with one lap to go , Lac key bailed, leaving th e .w in 10 Ri chard Sa nd s (Su z). T arantino (Hon ) took the honors in th e second qual ifier a fter slip p ing past Don G riewe (Suz), As the tension mounted. the ga te dropped for.the beginn in g of the first o f two 14-la p events for th e 250cc Pros. Off th e start Micky Dym ond (Mai) ba tt led T arantino but the Honda flash put it in hi gh gear a nd was virt ua lly gone. Following Dymond were Griewe and Man Tedder (Hon). By lap 10Ta ra ntin o was sta rt ing 10 lap slower riders. j ohn Finkelda y (KT M) posted his 495cc right on th e 'fender o f Dymond for third and o n lap II . Fi n kelday got past Dym ond and Griewe for seco nd. Tarantino won hi s th ird moro on th e . da y with Finkeld a y seco nd. Criewe followed wi th Dymond; Greg Zitterkopf (Yam)and Andy j efferson (H us) making up the top six . Zinerk opf wa s offi cially second Yamaha-mounted Mike Craig parlayed three firsts and a second to sweep both th e Stock and Modified Intermediate Mini classes a t Barona Oaks. T eam Green rider Frankie Brundage seemed to have th e upper hand on Cra ig in th e Stock s a fter a strong fir st moto win , but a DNF in the second go ' ro u nd puthimout of it. Yamaha rider T erry McClure had a bu sy day with a pair of tie-br eak er seconds, both o f them co m ing a t the ex pense o f Lu ck y Yamaha rider Lance Barnell. In th e 125s, Pacific Bea ch Honda rider Kenn y Dunlap o nce agai n domina ted with a sweep of th e Stock a nd Modified Experts, 1981 Champ Mit ch Palmer (Ha n) came up with two second p laces over new Ex pert Keith Craig (Ya m), but it wasall Dunlap at the checkers. Although it is still very early in th e season, it' s beg inningto look lik e Dunlap cou ld follow h is buddy Ron Lechien in scoring backto-h ack Mini and 125cc championships at Barona. . The Intermediate 125s featured another clean sweep by Burger King Yamaha rider Chris Swift, who ran a head of Mark Scott in both the Stocks and th e Mod ifieds. Ironicall y, the seco nds earn ed Scott a transfer 10 the Experts for the next race day; Swift will be along shortly, though! Going back to the Minis, 12-16 No vice sensa tio n Mik e Allen (Suz) co n tin ued his win binge a t Barona wi th another perfect two-for- two day .
