With three wins out of four classes entered, there isn 't much doubt in the competition's minds that he's returned. The first race of the day was the combined 450 and 600cc Box Stock classes. A brand new rider, Suzukimounted Jim Cox of Wildlife Performance, took the 450cc win over veteran Nevada Yamaha rider Mik e VanNatta. This was to be the first of three class wins for young Cox. Quite a start for a brand new racer. In th e 600cc class , Bob Betke turned in his first win of the day over Phil Florian (Wildlife Performance/Wayne's Machine Shop). Next up was the combined 750 and Open Box Stock classes . Betke again crossed the finish line first with Champion Kawasaki ride r Mike Krolich and Nevada Yamaha 's Slim Stephen s fini shing in th e de uce a nd trey spots. Gary H odum and Kenny Farm er (Champion Kawsak i) ro un ded o ut th e top five in the 750s. Bill Price, a nother Cha m pion Ka wasak i ri der, cruised home for the O p en class go ld. Fo llowing that race, the combi ned 450cc Production and 500cc Vintage cla sses gridded up. Newcomer Jim Co x again took th e 450cc win a fter a 10-lap duel with Mik e Van Na tta. In the Vin tage class, Kawasak i-mo un ted Bob Rapp took th e checker ahead o f T M400 rider Albert Hl a basko. "Mr. Clean " Hen ry Tecza (Wildlife Performance) was number one in this race with Jody Morgan on his Nevada Yamaha-sponsored Seca tak ing seco n d. Jim Cox co u ld on ly get a third in this go 'rou nd, with Phil Florian and Armando Melgosa fini shing fou rth an d fifth, respectively. Betke scored his third win of th e day in th e 750cc Product ion class. Mik e Krol ich , Slim Stephen s, Kenn y Farmer and Henry Tecza were th e next four fin ishers. Bill Price agai n aced th e Open Production class. Wh en th e co m bined 450 a n d 600cc Super Street class waved off , Jim Cox and another first time rider , Sportsman Cycle-sponsored Rick Elias, fell out for a little close order drill. Cox took th e n ag for hi s th ird wi n of th e day with Elias runnin g seco nd an d Slim Stephens, this tim e riding th e Glenn Barrentine-sponsored RD350, filling out the number three slot in . the 450s. In the60Occclass , last year's SNRR high point rider, Jack Baker, on a Nevada Yamaha Seca, took an easy win. The 750cc Super Street rac e had a formida ble line-up of talent in it. Jack Baker took the win, but Betke, Stephens, Farmer and Hodum were all in the hunt. Keith Brewer, an unsponsored rider from Phoenix, had to seule for sixth, and Bruce Haupt took seventh. Lee Fleming from Champion Kawasaki was the pre-race favorite in the Open Super Street class, and he didn 't disappoi nt anyone. Except ma ybe Reno 's J on Pari sena. Parisena 's tu rbo 900 Z-I , sponsored by Cyc letro n, gave it a hell- of-a -go , but he j us t co uld n ' t ge t by Flem in g. Breker blasts Saturday Saddleback By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, MAR. 27 Factory Kawasaki st ar Goat Breker rode a production KX250 to commanding leads in both Saturday Saddleback Motocross 250cc Pro mows. " It was a bit slip pery in the first mow," noted Breker as he claimed his first place share of the purse, " but rhe second moro was fine." The cloudy and semi wet conditions didn 't stop man y of the local 250cc riders from keeping the pressure on Breker as 17 Pros threaded through the first turn at the start of the first race. Breker quickly moved into the lead position followed by Yamaha riders Don Griewe and Greg Zitterkopf, Zitte rkopf worked past Griewe near the midway point but bobbled two laps later and dropped back to finish third behind Breker and Griewe. Mow two again saw Breker take the early lead with Griewe pressuring for the first few laps before fading off the killer pace set by the Kawasaki ace. Griewe held on to finish second a hea d o f Ziuerk opf and earned the number two purse m on ey. Honda rider J eff Yochum posted a 4-5 score to gr ab fourth overa ll. Ken Ra rzloff powered away wi th th e Veteran Expert race despi te strong co mpeti tion from Su zuki rider Bert Weh r a n d KTM-m ounted R ick Watson. Ratzloff push ed hi s Mai co to the front in mow one as Wehr a nd Watson battl ed for the runner-up slot ahead of Su zuki rider J erry Benson. Ratzloff slow ly p u lle d away from th e field a nd o pened a safe lead by th e chec kers . Weh r hel d o n to fin ish seco nd wi th Wa tson th ird. Rat zloff found th e smooth lines in ro u n d two action an d ope ned a big lead ea rly in th e mow . Watson was involved in a first lap p ile-up th at ca used him to DNF. Benson and Wehr dueled for seco nd place for most of th e rn oto with Ben son edging a head at th e finish . Wehr earned seco nd p lace honors beh ind Ratzloff and Benson picked up thi rd . Kawasaki-sponsor ed Paul Den is wi cked hi s 80cc Un i-Tra k to victory in th e Mini Expert race. Denis was clearl y th e fastest rider o n th e co urse and lapped n earl y th e ent ire field in eac h m ow. ( S uz~ Canyon hosts AZ Championship MX By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, MAR . 28 Motocross racers from all over Arizona were out in full force for the second round action of the Arizona State Championships at Canyon Raceway. In the 250cc Expert class, Bobby White grabbed th e holeshot and roosted into first. Bobby Blose and Scott Stallard followed closely. By the second lap the three riders had a four-second lead over the 17 other Experts. White dropped down to third and then dropped out completely with engine trouble. Yamaha rider Brya n Hayes jammed out of the pack to take over third and began to threaten Stallard for second. It loo ked like Blose was wa lking away with it , but it just wasn't to be. Hayes had just put away Stallard when it looked as if Blose was having engine trouble. He pulled over to let
