They got back into the race only to discover at their first pit stop that their battery had died, and they couldn't restart the bike. After pushing and pushing they decided to try to put enough of a charge in the battery to get it going again. They finally got it started but had the same problem at the next pit stop. By this time, the Racers Supply team was out of the race and Rave them their spare battery. Believe it or not, the Thomas! Frettas team finished the race with no more p ro blem. The tro p h ies for the race were huge mugs engraved with the AR RA logo and were given out at the following day's sprint races. Everything was really well organized, and the turn workers did a commendable job of keeping it a safe race . ·Results 600: 1. Hormolo /Redmond (Kow) 135; 2. Stout stands out at DeAnza MX By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAR. 28 Riverside Suzuki's Rick Stout (Suz) took complete control of the 125cc Pro class by sweeping today's motos a t DeAnza Cycle Pa rk. Stout had to fight off the stiff competition fro m Eric Poffin (Hon) and Do nn ie Sigrist (Suz). T rack conditions couldn't have been any better a t the start of the first 125cc Pro moto. Sigrist jammed into the lead followed by Po ffin, Stout and Charles Osterday (Suz). Sigrist managed to hold on to his lead , but Poffin was hot on his rear fen der. By the fifth lap Sigrist gave up h is lead when Poffin snuck by, but Sigrist wasn't about to let the leader get out of his sight. Stout got into the picture after he passed Sigrist on the eighth la p and zapped Po ffin a few turns la ter. Sigrist also startled Poffin when he passed the second place rider on the final lap. Sigrist grabbed the holeshot at the start of the second rnoto followed by Stout and Po ffin. The battle for the lead was fierce, but it ended when Sigrist tan k-slapped into the ground. Sigrist got up slow ly. He tried to continue, but had to pull off after a few turns. That gave Stout a comfortable lead a ll the way to the finish. Poffin took second wh il e Os terday settled for third. Paul Bu rva l (Suz) took command of the first moto of the 250cc Novice class, lead in g from start to finish . Burva l gra bbed the holeshot with Jerry Mullins (Suz) and Mark Montgomery (Kaw) on his knobby tracks. By the second lap Montgomery managed to sneak by Mullins for second. o Montgomery tried to catch the leader, but Burval had stretched his lead to a comfortable margin. Mark Valentino (Ka w) had worked his way up to third, by the third lap, to challenge Montgomery. But in the end, Burval took the win followed by Montgomery, Valentino and Mullins. At the start of rnoto two, it was Dino Provenghi (Hon ) who stole the early lead. Bu t Mullins and Valentino both snuck by Pro ven g h i before th e second lap. A lap la ter , Montgomery had worked his way up to seco nd. then he cha llenged Valentino for the lead and won. When the checkered flag appeared, it was Montgomery who crossed th e finish line first followed by Vale n tino, Mu llins and Pro ven gh i. A 1-2 score gave the overa ll victory to H onda- m ou nted J ames Wiggi ns in the h ighly competitive Mini Beginner class. Wiggins gra bbed the hol eshot in th e first moto and never looked back as he took the wi n. In the second moto Wiggins had to settle for second behind Todd Wensel (Suz).
