The fir st hea t had gone to Don H oward in sp ire of hi s ha vin g probC 'l lems wi th the north turn, and a vi rtua l cr ow d scene beh ind him o f J ohn ~ Matherson . Steve Karsten a nd Jimmy 0. Ro sa, with Ka rsten finally nabbing ...( th e second dir ect transfer by overtak ing Matherson do wn the ba ck ch u te. The third heat had Scott Podergois leading it for a while on a 500cc Honda, a mount some of th e riders seemed a bit leer y"to pass o n th e outside line in sp ite of more ponies on their part. Scott had one gr eat start, going from th e ou tsid e of th e front row to th e in side a nd into turn one first. T he fini sh order was: Walton, Dan Moore (on another 500cc), Bill McDonn ell a nd Pod ergois. Bill McDonnell led the J u ni or semi start to finish, th en came Chuck Ca rroll with seco nd. John Matherson a nd Em ory G ra y got the last two transfer s, while Podergois had the bad luck o f blowing up o n th e back stretch. The main left th e line with Pe te Hames leading it and Don Howard in second. Then Walton and Karsten scrapped over fou rt h behind Dan Moore. Walton finally got passed by Barry Pelkey, a nd Steve Kartsen was charging away a head o f Moor e. U p front H am es was a p peari n g to be taking it a bit co nservatively after bu ild ing up qu ite a lead, but Howard was co mi ng up wit h it a ll hanging o u t. H e flew into tu rn three over his head, ca tchi ng Pete in the middle o f the turn a nd bash ed into the side of him. Hames £lew up in the ai r a nd crashed hard a nd o ut ca me th e red flag with five full laps comp leted. Hames was very sha ken up, a nd slow getti ng up but mad e it back into the pits under his own steam , whil e Referee Ron Glasgow had a nice firm chat with Mr. Howard and disqual ified him. Polesitter Do ug Ch andler took off with th e lead in th e No vice main and ne ver lost it, a lt ho ugh second place rider Bob Land wa s go ing in deeper on his Yamaha th an Ch andler was on his Honda. The two leaders from Sal inas and Porterville too k the full measure o f th e local brigade, with Darren Hulbert (Suz) th ird ...ir's good to see all those brand names o u t there. For a whil e the tigh test raci ng was back a way between Mearl Barnett, Dan Bennett a nd J im Toews. That win was seco nd week in a ro w for Doug Chandler and he's the current high point man. There will be CMC TT racing Thursday n ight at Ascot , bu t no half mile as it's the even ing before the Sacramento Mi le and everyone will be heading north. - ...... Goss boss at Ascot HM By Maureen Lee Photos by Dan Mahony GARDENA, CA, APR. 9 It was a slow track Friday night with big guns like Randy Goss and Ted Boody time trialing at 23.20 and 23.12 and other Experts in the high 23s, but two did make it in the 22 bracket: Danny Perkins with 22.64 and young Mike Garrison with a blistering 22.151 The Tulare Expert flat blew the socks off everyone. Garrison shot off with the lead in the first Expert heat, followed by Steve Monger, Steve Oort, John Burnett and Goss. Goss was taking some time to warm up to his Grand National Championship form.while up front Monger was giving Garri- son a real run for the lead. At th e close he had it and th en Garr ison go t off in turn o ne with Gos s, who had worked up to third , do ing a fine job missing him and his bike. Second heat was the fastest. Perkins took the lead, chased by Ted Boody who got out of shape goin g through turn two, a fact taken fu ll advantage of by Chris Cannon and ROd Sullivan. Perkins went o n with th e win, Sullivan got by Cannon and Boody got by both of them, fin ish ing second and taking th e last di rect transfer. Garrison and Jeff Johnson did a bit of side by side riding for a bit in the sem i until Sal Hoffman got between them and finished second behind Garrison. Then came Johnson and John Burnell who got by Cannon in th e south turn. In the trophy dash Garrison took th e lead with Perkins riding around the outside in second, followed by . .. " • Bood y and Monger: . Per kins couldn 't find the traction he wa nted tha t high, a nd Boody swooped by underneath wh ile Garriso n sailed away up front. Again Perkins tried it on the outside of Boody, bu t no go , and Garrison won th e trop hy from H arley-Davidson West. The first run down in the 15-lap feature was Perkins, Garrison, Goss and Sullivan. Steve Monger the n gave Sullivan a real go for the fourth spot, but coming up was Ted Boody, who got Sullivan on the back chute with a good drive out of turn two and went after Monger. Up front, Goss took full adv antage of Perkins' wide line and slipped into the lead. Boody missed one chance to get around Monger, but he didn 't miss th e next one when Steve caught his left foot in the south turn and it kicked back on him. On lap 10, Perkins' motor blew on the main chute with one of the loudest bangs ever to shake Ascot; the whole place winced.
