He grabbed the holeshot and led a warring pack up the start hill. Alan Olson . a Veteran racer mounted on a Whe elsmith Maico. fought his way throughout both mot os for victory. The first round of acti on brought a taste of victory 10 Gl en Wells. o ut of racing for nearly a year a nd now back on the track with a Honda Sup- port ride from Ed Kretz Honda. It was Wells ' mota from wire to wi re. After a duel for the holeshot, Wells found himself hounded byanother Veteran. Marino Bastionell. Rod ger McCake (Suz) a nd Ol son rounded out the top fo ur. The rest of the field was insane with a combined .class of 125 and Open Int ermediat es all in ches apart. For the O pen riders, the d uel went down for second between Cucamonga Yama ha ace Don Glover a nd Ol son as Wells took command, G lover finished out the mo ta in second, hold ing Olson to third. When the big bo re -machi nes came to life for their second enco unt er. Wells once more led the charge wit h McCake and O lson right alongside. Run ni ng a tigh t T formation. Wells fought to ho ld McCak e and Olson back but slowly found himself losing ground a nd having 10 settle for the fourth place slo t. The race belonged to Ol son . He fin all y slipped a wheel under McCake for th e lead . McCake fought 10 hold Gl over a t bav bUI bv more's end had to settle for third. O'lson led th e wa y, taking down top honors for the da y. Gl over scoo ped up second overa ll. a nd McCake ca me home third. good for fourth o vera ll. Wells crossed the lin e in fo urth , taking third overa ll. Hangtown may have lured man y of the leading Pros awa y. but the Saddleback cro wd found itself treated 10 a super 250cc Pro contest with David Taylor in command. H e scooped upa pair of wins for the day . When they blasted ou t of th e ga te for their first moro, Todd Pe terson turned his Yamaha loose and led an unruly pa ck up the hi ll an d through a turn that snared five racers. Peterson. Tay lor and Kawasaki -mounted Rick Rod gers guided th e pac k into on e of the hairiest races of th e da y. Suzuki West's Craig Dale was on the ga s a nd going for it in fourth . Carpenter took the holeshot in the first rnoto over Chris Westwood, Mark King, Louis Brazier , a nd Eric Solorano, King pow ered hi s way into second by passing Westwook on the back straight of the sma ller and faster track, compared 10 last year's due to the recent rains. King took over the lead o n the th ird lap when he passe d ' Carpenter in the "9 1X Shakane." Solorano star ted to work his way into the hunt for the lead by passi ng Brazier fo r fo urt h . Solorano started 10 put pressure o n Westwood in third but suffered engine troubles and faded to the back of th e back. Brazier mov ed back into fourth on the seven th lap a nd into th ird o n the eigh th. pa ssing
