In the 250cc class, Kell y Johnson put on a terrific battl e for seco nd and after severa l position changes durin g the 15-lap main event, J eff Washburn slipped ins ide o f Joh nson an d beat him to th e chec kered flag. Odyssey com pe tition was wild wi th lot s of screa mi ng and yelli ng comi ng from th e gr an dstan ds. With th ree ma in s in th e St ock clas s, yo u had to be fast ju st to be in th e A m ain. Al Blanch ett e was fast and sm ooth but h ad no easy win. Chris Durham a nd Randall Ridge were breathing fire on Blanch ett e from sta rt to finish , with Durham finishing seco n d. In the Super Stock class, Wa yn e Gilmore. a fter a second place finish a t th e Kingdome, sa id he was ready. He was. His Super Stock machine is a mover. and h is past ex perience as a sand car racer makes him hard to beat. Tracy Longneck er and Bob Darnell battled it out for second with Longnecker ending up second. A good turnout of Modified cars made for exciting racing in all the mains. Jeff Gibson. who is often in the winner's circle at smooth track races. proved to be the hot one hold- . ing off Robert Coolbaugh and Rod Ank. Sunday Sunday morning showed promise . of fair weather for the Grand Prix . as more entries signed up and teched in . bringing the total up to over 100 riders. At the rider's meeting, Wax was i n tr o d uced and g a ve th e threewh eelers some tips on GP-typ e racing. Wax showed th e spirit of T eam Honda as he told th em he would not take any aw ards an d wanted th em passed on to h is fellow com pet itors. Du e to schedule of 200 and 250s runn ing togethe r. Wax opted for th e 250cc class o n hi s 250R. The fir st 15 laps he appeared to be unbeatable. not on ly had he lapped th e 200cc class, he had lapped all but on e 250. Kell y Johnson wa s runn ing in second abou t a half a lap behind Wa x, wh en the unexpected happened. Wa x pitched a ch ain , and Johnson closed in. Wax restarted and right at the finish lin e area pitch ed it again. Johnson moved into th e lead , and Wax put on hi s ch ain an d went into th e pits. J ohnson lapped the rem aining two ma ch in es wh en Wax returned with o nly eigh t laps to go . Wax was now in secon d position and Johnson having a stro n g lead . After th e race John son com men ted. " I saw Wax putting his cha in on, but I didn't know he was go ing into th e pits. I figured he'd be che wing on my rear en d an y minute." It never happened as J ohnson won. Wax was seco n d, and Darrel Muell er. The 200cc class was a ba ttl e. Mickey Dunlap wh o bro ke hi s tric ked o ut mach in e on Sa turday and was ridi ng a nearl y stock 185S, got a lou sy sta rt an d en ded up last into tu rn one . Lap after lap he passed mac h ines ... 19 of th em u ntil he was first. Mark Ch arnpoux on a h ard run ni ng 175 TriMo to was second. Champo ux p roved to be a good competi tor , never gi ving Du nl ap a ny brea th in g room. Foll owin g in third was Jerry Mar cy o n a ho t 185S, staying wit hi n striki ng distan ce. T he Stoc k Odyssey class was wo n by Chris Du rham but not withou t lot s o f p ressure right to th e flag with Ron Mitch ell seco nds behi n d him. T odd Will iamson won the Su per Stock class and Mod ifi ed becam e a survival test as well as a race with many rigs break in g down or flattening tir es. Robert Cool bau gh took over th e lead o n the 10th lap when Ted Walters , o n the trick Coun tryside Honda machin e, mad e a pit stop.
