Fairgrounds, a nd as us ua l, there w a s m o r e sno w and rain ~ha t turned your goggles to a sheet of Ice . ~ Two courses were bu ilt. An ova l for the Odysseys , a nd a TT-type tra ck, runni ng off the oval , for all th e three- wheelers. T he 70cc Kids class a nd the I IO cc J u n ior class were bo th won by 11 yea r-ol d Mik e Powers. Mik e was ru n n ing faster ti mes than most of the ad ults, a nd wit h a few mor e races u nder hi s belt , co uld develop into a serious threa t to the adu lt 11 0 class : Po ssibl y th e clos est race and the biggest sur prise o f th e day wa s the Powder P uff class . Before the races, a few of the wives a nd gi rl friends asked if we co u ld run a ra ce for them . Si nce we hand't planned a Powder Puff race, we told them if th ey cou ld rou nd up at least five g irls to ride, we wou ld ru n a class. Wh en the flag dropped, nine of the most determined look in g riders I've ever seen , dov e in to the first turn . Th ey cha rged bu mped and shoved each other aro und the entire five la ps, till Patti e Shawley won th e first heat . T he o n ly cas ua lty was Li sa G rove, wh o fli pped o ff th e end of the track rat her th an back off and let a no ther girl pa ss her. Grove was tak en to the ho sp ital fo r a poss ib le fractured leg . As th ey were loadin g her into the a m bu la nce, her o n ly co ncern was if she qua lifi ed for th e feat ure. T he rest of the three-wh eel cla sses were hea t a fter hea t of very close racing. Ra lph Ho user edged o u t Leroy Ohl in th e IlOcc class, wh ile the 125cc classs went toJ im Welsh ans. Ga le com p le ted thi s ta sk by tak ing top honors in the T wo-Cycle Stock a n d Two-C ycle Open cla ss. The Two-Cycl e Stock clas s saw Gale's cousin T im H uff a n d George Maddox do th e ch a sin g. It was o ne of th e better races of th e da y. " I a lmost h ad him more th an once," sa id H uff. " If it h adn 't been for the DNF in the seco n d hea t, we would ha ve had a good day ." Huff took two seconds a nd a DNF to fini sh third overal l.
