We justfoun d o ut about you r paper recently and are very excited about it, in a s much as we will ru n both cycles, three -wheelers Odysseys at o ur track on Friday evenings starti ng April 23, and two a nd four-cycle kar ts on Saturday evenings starting April 24. Ou r track is a fifth mile semibanked dirt track located two mi les west of Oskal oosa, lA, approxima tely 60 m iles southwest of Des Moi nes. The trac k has 260 feet straigh taways wi th banked co rners and is over 40 feet wide a t the narr owest point. The ligh ting fo r the track will be second to non e. T he p it area will be hardsurfaced with drive-on sca les. - Ma nufacturers fro m all over the nation have very gracio usly donated p roducts that they manufactur e or sell to be given awa y to o ur kart season poin ts cha m p ions . I mean co me on, you thin k th e othe r guys had problems? Let me tell you abo ut problem s! Not three mil es from the start my th ro ttl e stuck, a nd I endoed th e bike, tearing the left half of m y handlebars off. I was to find out lat er that gav e me a hairline fracture of my tailbo ne. Well , a specta tor ga ve me a ride back to th e sta rt wh ere I took apa rt a nother ATC for th e ha ndl ebars, went back to the bike a nd rep aired the race bi ke. I left th e sta rting line at 6:49, a nd wh en I left the breakdown point it was 8:25. Now you try riding the first 85 miles of th e Ca liforn ia side with a sligh tly pa infu l tailbone. I kn ew the cars were behind by about a hal f a n hour bu t was too dazed to really be co ncerned. The Class One cars ca ug h t me a t ch eckpoi nt o ne, a mem orabl e moment you ca n be su re. It was here I gave th e bike to rnv co-rider Rick MacLean wh ere he headed fo r the California fin ish . Not five m iles down a the road , ha lf a dozen Class One cars caught him, causi ng him to dump the bike twice, as Mickey Thom pson 's car ca ug h t h is rig h t foot a nd th rew hi m from th e bike. He then sped scared to death over the finish line on the Califo rnia side. Now since the first four cars finished about half an ho ur befor e us, that left on ly a half hour lead o n th e Arizona freewa y side. T hey ca ug h t up with th e bike at checkpoint two .
