TEN YEARS AG·O - California's on-again, off-again political /motorcycle brush fires were ignited when Assemblyman W. Craig Biddle introduced a bill calling for mandatory helmet use by motorcycle riders and passengers. .. . 0-e l-o Works Yamaha riders captured the victories as the Pacific-AMA motocross series moved to Carnegie Cycle Par k in northern California. In the 250cc class. i t was a seesaw contest between the works Yammie of Jim Weinert and the CZ of Brad Lackey, but Weinert finally tri umphed. In the 500cc ranks. Gary Jones took his Yamaha to a win over Huskymounted Bob Grossi. The 1972 speedway season opened at the Indio, CA. showgrounds. Bill Cody used the opportunity to take the season's first Scratch main over Rick Woods and Steve Bast, while Eric Olsen won the Handicap main over Steve Bast and his brother Mik e. Bruce Baron debuted the 125 Husky with a win at an ACA Saddleback motocross. It was battle waged by young riders in the 125cc Expert class at Corona Racewa y. In the end. l6-year-old Bu ltaco pilot Ken ny Zahrt emerged the winner over Penton rider Danny La Porte. Skip Newell was named public relations manager of Kawasaki Motors Corp.
