Kurt Dietrich, on his O pen Suzuki, and Dale Ream, mounted on a Yamaha 250, swapped pl aces beh ind 0 1' Sam for two a nd three overall. Dan Lewis on a 250 Can-Am was right behind Kurt and Da le to take overall fourth and the numero uno a mong the 250cc Novices. Yamahamou nted Dave Inkel was ri ght behind Lewis for th e second spot in their class foll ow ed by Honda-mounted Don Herold of Apple Valley: Sorry some of you mi ssed out on this experience, but sometimes life's a bummer. NMA Winternationa/s plays at Saddleback By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA, MAR. 21 Saddlebac k Park wa s tu rned into an anthill of racers as sev- saki Western Winternationals had its grand finale race on the International track. This day was long awai ted by the NMA participants who had the chance 10 win one of the new Kawasaki bikes tha t were to be given away by drawing. The winners: Steven Kotajarvi of the 9-11 class won a KX80; Sean Delvenneof the 12+ group won the other KX80 and Rich ie Dobbs won the KXI25 drawing for a ll ofthe motorcycle entrants. Many of the top Mini racers started fro m the Pee Wees, but this year the , class is very small since Ronn ie Densford moved up recen tly and King Ri ch ard Sax ton has beco me a to ug h competitor in the J u n ior Cycle class . Jesse James has moved in and is challenging Chris Pfatenhauer. He took h is YZinger after Pfa ten hauer's Italjet in bo th rnotos but couldn' t ca tch h im in today's race. Josh Barker is a nother new little competitor and he rode h is Italjet to third. Greg Skibel was the fourth place rider. All of the Junior Cycle classes were sent off in waves with most of them having about five riders each. There are a number of riders who came from Arizona, and Jimmy -Bu u on from Phoenix is one of them. Jimmy dominated the 60cc Stock Novice 911 race. Ronnie Densford couldn't catch him in the first moto and fin ished second. Dustin Evans did an endo off the line. This put him behind, but he managed third. Jimmy secured the final moro lead while Evans and Densford crashed together with Evans taking second. Bu tt on took an easy first place overall trophy ahead of Evans and Densford. Densford scored perfectly in 'the 60cc Modified Novice 9-11 race . In the first moto Evans was after Ro nnie. These riders took a good tumble in the final moto as the top three riders went down . Ron n ie said he ran over another rider in a corner, and he , along with Evans and Bu tt on fel l. Ronn ie and J im my too k the top positionsin the fina l race . O verall it was Densford, But ton, Evans and Wine. King Rich ard Saxton won both the Stock and Modified Junior Cycle Intermedi a te 9-11 classes. The King wo n all four of his rnotos. Shaun Kalos is one of the rocket riders from R&D Racing Engines in Norwalk. Kalos ran away with the 60cc Modified Expert 9-11 race and won both motos. Tommy Clowers and Bubba Erickson were competing in the first moto and started trading places. Erickson got the best of the situation an d did the same in the final whi ch earned him second overall. Kalos did not have a Stock bike so Mike Pascarella battled Clowers and came out on top. Clowers took the first moto win, and Mike was second. It turned around in the final, and Mike was ahead. Erickson's chances were cut short when he fell on the corner by the starting down hill and was caught underneath his Yamaha. O vera ll finishing order was Mi ke Pa scar ell a, Tommy Clowers, Steven Kotajarvi and Bubba Erickson. At the end of the day, Derek Nye was one of the seven ri ders wh o walked off with two first place trophies. Derek won both the 80cc Stoc k and Modified Nov ice 12+ races. In th e Stock race he led the firs t mo to very easily. . Thayne Ziro has never raced with th e NMA before but he did well. He took second after he passed Gary 1
