'D ave Pettigrew led both motos. but an errant DeAnza mudhole was his downfall. Roark roars at DeAnza MX By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAR. 21 Cool and sunny conditions prevailed today at DeAnza Cycl e Park, providing a great day of MX racing. Rick Roark (Hon ) • 30 took ad vantage o f th e sprin g condi tions by riding consistently to ta ke home top dollar in the 250cc P ro class. The action began with the sta rt C?f the first 250cc Pro moto when SUZUkI' mounted Dave Pettigrew rocketed in fro nt of the pack wh ile pursued by Marty Miller (Hon), R ich ard Hoffman (Yam) a nd Mark Ellis (Yam) . Much of the actio n too k pl ace onl y a few turns, into the race wh en ~ of. fm an tangled with another rider , pitch ing the Yam aha pilot over the ba rs and ou t of th e race. Wi th in a few la ps, Petti grew had developed a co mfo rta ble lead . A battle over second had developed between Miller a nd Ellis. Ellis, on the third la p , had managed to snea k by Miller, but Miller retal ia ted a lap lat er. Soon a fter, Roark had joined in o n th e fu n picking off Ellis, then setting a fte r Miller. The two - Miller a nd Roark - engaged in a tight duel for th e next few laps, bu t Miller surren dered his second spot to Roark. Meanwhile, Pettigrew seemed to be sa il ing to a sure victory, but with on ly two laps remai n in g , he went down in a mudhol e. In the fin al res ult, th is ga ve Roa rk the win a~d secon d and th ird to Miller a nd Ell is. At the start of m oto two, i t was again Pettigrew who grabbed th e hol eshot, hotly cha sed by Miller and Roark. During th e seco nd la p , Miller had roosted Pettigrew to tak e o ver the lead. Miller devel oped a sligh t margi n over Pettigrew , but Pettigr ew began to ga in ground on th e lead er a few laps later. Pettigrew in herited th e lead after Miler's front wheel washed o ut over a berm, causing him to go down. In ttJ.e end, Pettigrew managed to keep 11 tog ether for the win . Roark too.k second while Miller h ad to pass Ell IS on the la st lap to take third. In the Women's Expert class, it was Kim Dougl a s (Su z) wh o ha d to fend o ff riva l Mercedes Gonzales (Yam) to take home the first-place cash. In the first moto , Gonzalezg rabbed the early lead a head o f Dougl as, Ran di Ehrenborg (Suz) and J anice Murray (Yam). Dougl as took th e W In Iollow ed by Gonzalez, Karen Leit in ger (Suz) a nd Mu rra y. Moto two was a ll Douglas' as she led from start to finish just ahead of Gonzalez. Don na G ilio and Leitinger: Ca l Stue bne r( Suz ) co m bined a 3·1 score to cap ture the victory in th e 250cc Novice class, edging o u t Mark Val entino (Kaw), who settled for two consistent seconds . Mark Decker (Ya m) and Bryan Curtis (Kaw) seem to be Arlington 's workhorses as they finished 1-2 and 1·4 in the 125and I75cc Sen ior classes, respect ivel y. Both . t im e~ the ~wo battled it out, so me u me s SIde by side, but it was Decker wh o managed to co me out on top. North 's Phil Pia (Kaw) a n d Scott Burns ( Ka w)a lso ~i d business in the 125 and I75cc Senior classes. The two finish ed seco n d a nd th ird in th e 125s whil e in th e 175s th ey took third an d fourth . Mik e Dondel of Hemet took top honors in th e IOOcc Novi ce class aft er he took the win each time out. Taking second to Donel wa s teammate Ky Kei ber (Su z). Dee Dee Ashl ey of North cap tured thi rd. When the gate dropped for the first 250cc Pro moto, it was Australian MX star Stephen Gall (Yam ) who jam med into the lead followed by Malcolm Smith 's Greg Zitterkopf (Ya m). Pomona Yamaha 's J ack ~co tt an d T odd Elmer (Kaw). Gall did a ll he could to sha ke Zitt erk opf, but it was to no a vail. By th e th ird lap, Zitterk opf h ad snuck by Gall to tak e over th e lead. Gall sta yed close to the leader , but Zittero pf had th e ho me field adva ntage. In th e en d, it was Zitterkopf wh o crossed th e finish line Ott firs t ahead of Gall , SC an d Robin Rhodes (Suz). Like the fir st mot o , it was Gall who roosted into th e second rnoto lea d. but Zitterkopf was breathi!1g do wn h is rea r fender. On the third la p, Zitterk opf was still hard upon th e leader , but Zitterkopf had some tr oubl e thr ou gh th e super cro ss wh oops, losing a few yard s to Gall. O n th e sa me lap, th ou gh, Zitt erkop managed to reel Gall in a nd pass th e leade r. From th ere, the race wa s a ll Zitterk opf's as he went on to tak e th e wi n. Gall sett led for seco nd wh il e third and fourth went to Andy Guth (Suz) and Rhodes. Ton y Tom ps o n (Ya m) took over the lead on th e second la p a n d never look ed back as he won th e first moto of the 125cc Novi ce class. A third in the seco nd mot o was en o ug h for the Yama ha pilot to captu re fir st overa ll. Lunde, Vargusposf CMC wins at Sunrise Valley By Bert Valenzuela ADELANTO, CA. MAR. 21 It was a beautiful da y, and the track was in superb condition at Sunrise Valley as Tim Lunde took the overall Pro win on his 250cc Honda. Taking wins in both rnotos, th e yo un g man in red, white a n d blue leathers breezed around the ch a llen gin g course while turni.ng bla zing times. He led all but the first lap in mo to two and the fir st two in rnoto one. Brian Vargus (Open Suz) a n d Dale Lewis (O pe n Mai ) were closest to Lunde as the y di ced around the circuit. In mo to one Vargus took over seco nd for good on lap seven and repeated the feat on lap nine of mota two to win th e Open class . Michael Hair (Yam ) went 4-3 to edge out Dave Eropkin (3· 4) for the show spot in the big bik e class. T om Bro wn fini sh ed second in the first moto of th e 250cc class but faded to seventh in rn oto two, dropping to th ird behind J oaquim Pi cazo of Sim i Valley who used a 5· 2 score to hold down th e pla ce p o sition behind Lunde. Behind the m were Victorville Suzuki's Big Mik e Brown just a hea d o f Suzuki-m ounted J eff Lu cas from Po wa y. The non-Pro 125s put on a real show as Appl e Valley 's Johnny R';ly lit erally flew fro m gat e to fla g In rnot o o ne followed by fellow apple knocker Jim Peterson a n d Barstow's T im Ril ey. The seco nd sta nza sta rted out the same wa y, but Ray decided to do his weekly plowin g on lap th ree and although hedid a masterful job threading hi s wa y th rough th e pack ~ ~e co u ld n' t overtake the opporturnsnc Ril ey. Peterson took third. The final ou tcome was Ray overall, Riley placed an d Peterson took the sho w spot. Moor Park's Tony Alessio ran a wa y fro m th e Minis agai n to tak e first in bo th rnot os with Kenneth Tate running second and Stve Saling taking third ahe ad of James T a te.
