percent behind me . Everything's fin e, sh e's just a su pe r lad y. T he re is so me co ncern , but it's n ot fear or worry. We're no t goi ng to fear ge ll ing hurt. She's to ta lly su pportive. You r Da ytona 200 entry was q u ite a surprise. H o w did it come abo ut? I didn 't know I was going to rid e the 200, in fact, I didn' t feel co mfortable wi th th e Form u la One bike until Thursday. I was totally uncomforta ble with it befor e that. Most g uys ri de a 100, the n m aybe a 250 or 350, but I was thrown o n a For mula One bik e and hadn 't ever ridden one in my life before J a nuary, a nd th en I hat ed it l Now I lik e it as m u ch as a Super bi ke. It 's a gas. It was wide open the wh ol e way. Your seven th in th e 200 p ut yo u on top of th e Wi nston Pro Series p o in ts. Have yo u changed your mi n d on rid in g any of th e m iles or half miles? In m y ea rlie r interview with Cycle News I sai d that Mik e Kidd is the nu m ber o ne rider (for th e dirt tracks) and he's go t most o f th e su pport . I don 't really kn ow, I hav en ' t h ad a cha nce to ta lk to a nyone a t H o nda yet because I' ve been o n th e road sin ce Daytona , I haven 't been home yet. T his weekend when everyo ne co mes back in for Ta lla dega (Ala ba ma, Superbike round) th ere will be so me ta lk abou t th at. If th ey have ano the r NS (wo rks d irt tracker ) you m ig h t see me a t Ascot (ha lf mi leon May 8). Yo u never kn ow, the idea has been kicked arou nd . You've ach ieved quick success in yo ur new career. Do yo u ever feel you migh t have wasted you r time ri din g MX a ll those years? No. I thi n k MX is what gave me the backgrou nd to do th e things I've been doing. The conditioni ng factor was there. O nce again, I'm not trying to put down any form of cycle racing, bu t if people on ly knew what MX g uys have to go through to co n di tio n th em selves, th en th ey'd understand wha t it's all a bo u t. I th ink mo tocrossers hav e a big advantage over any of the o ther riders, and not beca use I'm a m ot ocrosser, because I'm not a n ymore. One da y we ta lked it over, a nd th ere' s onl y a h andful of MXers who co u ld do wh at I' m do in g. Are you tired of bein g regarded as an MX er wh o turned TT rider/road racer? I don 't m ind being regard ed as a mot ocrosser turned ro ad-racer because I enjoy motocr ossing an d trail riding so much . But th at 's pa st. Put it th is wa y: I'm a racer. I've wo n m o to cross ra ces, and I'm su re I'm goi ng to win a TT an d I'm sure I' ll win a road race. Tha t's n ot bein g boastful, th ose are my goals. Like Steve McLa u ghlin sa id -S teve Wise is a racer, h e lik es to race, an d h e does a lright in a ll types of co m peti tion. It made me feel good, because I never wo n a champions hip motocrossi ng, but I'm lookin g forwar d to wi n ni ng o ne road raci ng. Do you h ave an y predictions on your perform ance at T allad ega ? Frida y will be th e firs t day I sa t o n a bike since th e 200, a nd I ha ven 't done anyt hi ng special, I wo n ' t do any thi ng different from wha t I d id a t Da ytona. I' m just goi ng to go o u t a nd set my ow n pace, wh ich will be har d to do beca use o nce somebody good passes me I'll wa nt to ca tch him. I'm going for a top three or fou r fini sh, to ge t those (Su per bike Series) p oints. If I had been th inkin g a bou t tha t last weekend I wou ld ha ve been bet ter off. T here're a few people I need to tha n k rig h t n ow . Merlin Plu ml ey, Mi ke Velasco, Udo Cei tl. Larry Worrell, Joh n Twi ll, Ra y, Dudley, Todd the mach in ist, and a ll the peop le a t H on da who have been behind me . T hey 've given me an o pportu nity of a li fetim e. Alter Da ytona th ey'r e happ y, I'm ha p py , a nd l ow e the m a ll than ks. . • c-r 00 Q') T ICKETS AVA ILAB LE AT HOWE AVE.
