The weather permitted th e riders to race, but just barely as th ere was a problem of a different extreme. It started pouring around th e tim e for th e second moto , a nd off icials cut things short due to unsafe ridi ng condi tions. There was go ing to be a Pee Wee race , but with th e tiny tires on those bikes, the re was no wa y that the y could work thei r wa y through the m uck . Officials decided not to let th em race and hopefully they will be a ble to shoot it out in the fin a l event at Saddleback. There are two former Min i Experts wh o now batt le with eac h other in the 125cc Stock an d Mod ified Expert classes, Yamaha-mounted Ron Lechien and Johner Kigh t. Today th ey sp lit wins a nd money. The l25cc Modified ra ce had two motos, because it wa s th e first event on th e sch ed ul e. Many o f th e other eo,;ents were determined by th e o u tco m e of th e fir st m OI O. Kigh t got a wa v with th e firs t moto win ah ead of Lech ien and Ken Dunlap , who is a lso a for mer Mini Expert. In th e final moto Lechien struck back an d edged out Kight for th e top money spot. Th e l25cc Stock class ri de rs never had a chance for a second moto, a nd sinceKig h t w6n th e first moto, he wa s a lso the overa ll winner. Lechien palced second ahead of Joe Bond. Wh ere have a ll th e Min i Experts gone? They've ad va nce d to the bigger I25cc bikes. This is not on ly the case with Kight, Lechi en an d Du n lap , but a lso with T ra cy Meeks wh o cleaned up with both th e l 25cc Stoc k a nd Intermediat e victories. T he T eam Green rider reall y kn ew how to rid e in the mud. Meek s ran a wa y wi th th e Stock Intermediat e single mot o. J oe Rin con, from Rincon Kawasaki, followed in second. Russ Winkler fit into the third spot on hi s Yamaha a n d s topp ed Kawa saki-m ounted Bryan Curtis from making it a total Kawasaki sweep. Meeks proved th at it wa s not by ch a nce that he won the Stock race. In the Modifi ed event , he p lowed through th e mud and claim ed th e win in both motos. O nce again , Russ Wi n kler was h is main co m pe titor who took second ahead of Riverside racers Mark Decker a nd Bryan Curtis. It was a two-man battle in the I25cc Stock Nov ice ra ce as Jim Owen a nd Eric Sackett had fun slinging mud on eac h o the r. Sackett go t a way with the firs t moto win ahead of O wen-a nd Eric k Sjogren . It looked like Sackett was goi ng to wi n the fina l moto as he had a good lead. O wen started ga ining o n him an d made th e pass. Regar d in g the pass, Sac kett said , " I got ca ught in the mud, and I couldn't ou t-power hi m ." O wen took the wi n over Sac kett.
