Afte carding fast time in th e first special, H arden turned in an almost u n believeable time in the fourth special test to gi ve himself an a lmost untouchable lead he wou ld never relinquish . Harden had to contend with event favorite Larry Roeseler o n a modified YZ250J Yamaha waterpumper. Ro eseIer had fast time in two of the five speci al tests. Chuck Miller put hi s YZ490 into the th ird overa ll, seco n d 500cc spo t by stayi ng within one to four seconds o f Roesel er in a ll th e tests. Mill er said of the fin ish , " You never know ho w you did unti l the results are posted beca use you thi n k tha t you have done well , then some local guy comes from no pl ace a nd wins." He was righ t. Texas rider s too k bo th th e 125 and l75cc Intent wins. Zack Elki ns drove 40 mi les fro m Lubbock to win th e I 75cc Intent class on a Can-Am , whil e East Texas' Glen Hollingshead kept his KTM out of tr ou ble, avoided route marks, down time and crashes to take the small-but-star stud ded 125cc Intent class. Jack Penton, ri ding a wa ter-cooled Kawa saki KX 125, set fast time, o r tied it, in every test bu t acceleration, but a flat tire and balky air bottle cost h im the win. The route marks that he accumulated dropped h im to sixth, even though he looked very fast and was the first rider in at th e finish . First round l 25cc Intent winner, Mike Mel to n h ad problems, "I wa tered out in the first test , m y plug ca p go t soa ked , a n d I crashed prett y hard in th e th ird test an d lost 20 o r 25 seco nds. The rest of the day went good." Those two incidents probably cost him the win. Melton was second l25 cc. None o f the I 25cc riders broke th e top 10 overall.
