TEN YEARS AtII1 SANC TIONE.D AGO The 31st annual running of the Daytona .200 motorcycle road race saw Don Emde lead o n ly one lap of th e race on his 350cc Yam aha. The one lap he did lead, however, had a checkered flag on the end of it and Emde took the race . Geoff Perry had led for much of the race, but less than two laps to go the ch ain broke o n his 500cc Suzuki. Ray Hemptstead an d Dave Smith pl a ced 2-3 to make it a Yam ah a sweep for the 200. Englishman Phil Read took hi s Norton to fourth and first 750cc. For hi s win , Emde coll ected $13,200. . Befor e his third place in the Daytona 200, Da ve Sm ith took hi s Don Vescoprepped Yamaha to a narrow win in th e 250cc junior/Expert combined 100-mile race: Smi th's win came at the ex pe nse o f Kenny Roberts (Yam ) a fter Smith and Robert s had swapped th e lead 45 times, including six times on the las t lap. Robert Winters finished th ird. Ronnie Dottley was the winner o f th e 100-mile junior race, settin g a ne w record speed of over 103 mph , two miles an hour faster th an the record sett in g pace o f Dave Smith in the combine d race, Dottley was trailed by jean Lysight, James Chen and Scott Autrey. Along th e way Lon g had to d uel Cal ifornian Pat Evans, wh o dropped o u t of th e ru nnin g with three la ps to go . Papa Wealey report ed on two lar ge, multi-cylinder motorcycles co min g down the ro ad. One was a Kawasaki in th e 900cc range, a nd th e other was a six cylinder 750cc Benelli.
