Texas World Speedway will be the si te of a 24-hour endurance race on Mav 22-23. The Western Eastern R o~ d racer s Associa tion -sanc tioned event w ill be the first of its kind in Texas, with racing from 9 a.m. Saturday morning to9 a.rn. The California Park and Recreation Commission will meet on Apr. 9 to hold a hearing and then either approve or disapprove the General Plan for the Ocotillo Wells State Vehiclular Recreation Area . George M iller, managed to reopen the issue for discussion three times by presenting new information but each time it was voted down by the same 4-2. On Thursday, the legislature voted for the rip-off and the governor quickly signed it. Miller was ab le to get the rip-off reduced from the $17 million back to $8% million. The fight is not over yet. CORVA has already announced possible new legislation and/or lawsuit. Suzuki 's Terry Vance claimed the Pro Stock ti tle at the NHRA Gatorna tionals drag race he ld in Gainesville, FL. Resource planning is now underway for the preparation of five Management Framework Plan Amendments for 10 Wilderness ' Studies Areas (WSAs) in the Caliente, Folsom. and Hollister Resource Areas. Bakersfield District. The plan amendments will involve the Temblor-Caliente. Sierra, Fresno-San Benito. Monterey, and South Sierra Foothills planning areas . The plans will be incorporated under a single Environmental Impact statement lEIS) and will carry out the requirements of the Federal land Policy and Management Act · (FLPMA) of 1976. The purpose of these planning amendments is to determine the highest and best use of the subject lands and. through such a determination. the suitability or nonsuitability of the WSAs for wilderness designation . The process will result in recommendations by the Secretary of the Interior to the President as to which areas. or portions of areas, should be designated as wilderness. The final decision as to whether the WSAs should be designated com- ponents of the National Wilderness Preservation System will be made by Congress . The plan amendments and the EIS are scheduled for complet ion by September 30, 1982. The study process will analyze all resource values and ilses within each WSAto determine whether the area, or a portion of the area will be recommended as suitable or nonsuitable for wilderness designation . Th is process will 'address such issues as the grazing of livestOCk, motorized vehicle access, all forms of mi neral activity. land tenure , watershed, and recreational uses. The public is invited t o participate in the plan ning process by su rfacing issues, commenting on the planning cr it eria which will be developed to guide the planning effort, providing information to be I '.' cori6idereil in the planning process.
