Most of th e riders agreed th at th ey p referred the mix o f TT an d short track to fo u r n ights of oval ra cing. T im Mertens, T err y Poovey, Bubba Sho bert, Stev e Morehead , Mickey Fay an d Ted Boody a ll won heats before #17B Fran Brown broke th e stri ng with a win in th e fin al heat. Poovey, with th e fast est h eat an d a record o f su ccess here, wen t un contested to a win in th e first sem i. Mickey Fay held do wn a sa fe seco n d. but th e battl e for th ird was a three rider a ffair with Ri ch Kin g corning o u t o n to p with th e fin al transfer to th e m ain.
