" It looked a lo t like home," was h ow Hus-
qvarna-rno u nted overall winner Sco t H arden
described th e P ost Enduro Association-hosted
2 Post One-Day Qualifier trail sections. Afte
carding fast time in th e first
special, H arden turned in an
almost u n believeable time in
the fourth special test to gi ve
himself an a lmost untouchable lead
he wou ld never relinquish .
Harden had to contend with event
favorite Larry Roeseler o n a modified
YZ250J Yamaha waterpumper. Ro eseIer had fast time in two of the five
speci al tests.
Chuck Miller put hi s YZ490 into
the th ird overa ll, seco n d 500cc spo t
by stayi ng within one to four seconds
o f Roesel er in a ll th e tests. Mill er said
of the fin ish , " You never know ho w
you did unti l the results are posted
beca use you thi n k tha t you have done
well , then some local guy comes from
no pl ace a nd wins." He was righ t.
Texas rider s too k bo th th e 125 and
l75cc Intent wins. Zack Elki ns drove
40 mi les fro m Lubbock to win th e
I 75cc Intent class on a Can-Am , whil e
East Texas' Glen Hollingshead kept
his KTM out of tr ou ble, avoided
route marks, down time and crashes
to take the small-but-star stud ded
125cc Intent class. Jack Penton, ri ding a wa ter-cooled Kawa saki KX 125,
set fast time, o r tied it, in every test
bu t acceleration, but a flat tire and
balky air bottle cost h im the win. The
route marks that he accumulated
dropped h im to sixth, even though
he looked very fast and was the first
rider in at th e finish .
First round l 25cc Intent winner,
Mike Mel to n h ad problems, "I
wa tered out in the first test , m y plug
ca p go t soa ked , a n d I crashed prett y
hard in th e th ird test an d lost 20 o r 25
seco nds. The rest of the day went
good." Those two incidents probably
cost him the win. Melton was second
l25 cc. None o f the I 25cc riders broke
th e top 10 overall.
