MAR. 6 T eam Honda 's Darrell Shultz repeated his D a y ton a performance of last year and p o were d in to a lead h e never gave up a t Daytona Interna tional Speedway's Supercross race. Shultz took command through the first turn and held off charges from Suzuki's Mark Barnell, who 16 took second. and Honda 's Jim Gihson ......h o landed third. . ''I' m going to go for three wins." said Shultz as he sho w ered a huge cro wd with champagne. " It seems I pretty much o w n this track now !" Shultz's win didn't come easy . as a skirmish developed during the last part of the last la p when the top trio tried to pass Suzuki's Kent Howerton, who was being lapped. Shultz fought free to hold the lead by a w heel over Barnett. who took advantage of Gibson when Jim slowed to pass Howerton. Gibson held second until that point in the race . Practice was to start at noon but w as delayed for over an hour due to standing water on the track from the previous day's rain . Quick action by course designer Gary Bailey and crew brought the course to optimum con dition after practice. The course was revised this year, w ith fe w er infield sections and more choppy straights. and was also run in the opposite direction than in previous years. Barnett looked smooth but conservative through practice. whi le Shultz rocketed off the jumps with the throttle tapped. The AMA tried a new format w here 41 riders were transferred to the fina l at Daytona. making for a two-row start. Eight riders transferred from each six la p heat. with the top five from each heat earning a spot on the ga te. The fifth through eighth p lace riders in each heat. along with the top four from each six-lap semi and th e consolation winner. were lined up behind the front row . The final's sta rt was a hit hectic. but on ce the show got rolling it made for exciting racing. Preliminaries Ba rn ett made his intent ions kn own with his no-holds-barred ride to the checkered Ilag in heat one. Barnett pu t 100 yards on Hansen within a half la p off the line and never let off the pace. Honda team ma tes Chuck Sun and David Bailey fought over third for a few laps before Sun sett led into the slot. Bailey held fourth. with Yamaha's Scott Burnworth a steady fifth . Spencer Morrison w as sixth. and Yamaha supported Jeff Hicks looked like he was going in for seventh until he went into a flying W on the last lap off a jump and got tangled in the banners. Rick Johnson from Yamaha's Pro Support program took seventh w ith Honda support rider Larry Wosick eighth. An outside line through the first turn did the trick for Shultz in hea l IWO . Honda supported Danny Chand ler put the pressure on for a Iew lap s before he twisted it sideways through the air and crashed into a j ump. Yamaha 's Broc Glover picked up second and took it 10 the flag. Shultz a nd Glover put a gap on the pack wit h Ka w asak i's Jeff Ward. . Canadian Ross Pederson on a Suzuki, Chandler. Honda supported Ro n Turner. Kawasaki's Tom Benolkin and Yamaha bac ked Eri c McKenna spaced OUI behind. In heal three it was Yamaha's Bob Hannah all the way . The Hurricane (Continued 10 page 18)
