wh en th e checke red £lag Iell , it wa s Howes wh o took it fir st with Long second an d Muffl ey third. Final The fin al got underway with Filice grabbing th e lead o ver McDonald's K&N/Lectron/BeII-sponsored Yam aha with Wimmer and Schlachter running 3-4. Before the en d of the first lap, Schlachter m ad e a mistake a nd dropped back 10 fifth . Filice and Wimmer began 10 bailie for first as McDonald fir st dropped back and then charged right ba ck . The lead changed a few times before Filice wa s su dden ly out of the race when he crashed in turn two on th e fourth lap. " I hit some oil or water, and th e bike went down, " sa id Filice, who was uninjured, save for a headache. That left Wimmer and McDonald 10 argue over first with Schlachter a fair distance behind in third. Head 's Waddon, the onlv no n- Yamaha among the front-runners. was fourth ahead of Morris. For a few laps the top three were spread out. but by lap 10 alI three were under a blanket, and slingshot/draft passes became the order of the da y. Aft er Schlachter, Wimmer and . McDonald had taken their turns lead ing a bit of a lap, i t became a tworider bailie when McDonald ran into trouble. " I went into th e chicane and so mebo dy h ad falI en and there wa s hay on the rac etrack. I happened 10 be in the line with the hav on it . and 1 kinked the throule ca ble: It threw me off for about four laps, but after 1 got into the swing of things. those guys were on th e gas 100 much and 1 couldn 't catch them ." Meanwhile. Head was having a lonel y ride in fourth, but behind him there was a lively bailie for fifth being waged by Con Law (also on a Wad· don), Labrosse. Glover, Schmidt, Morris and Fred Merkel . among others. Up front , Schlachter and Wimmer were still at it . Schlachter did most of his passing going into the first turn , and Wimmer would usualIy repass coming out of that turn. Most of the rest of the passing came off the bank and onto the backstraight, and into the chicane. From th e halfway point on . Schlachter did most of th e leading across the finish line. With three laps to go, the Bob McLean/Champion / DunlopIPenon/CRCChemicaIslCam2sponsored racer took the lead for good. It was a calculated risk because of th e possibility of a draft/pass at the finish line, but Schlachter said, "I knew if I had a clean line through th e chicane. I could get a realIy good drive out of there. even though h e had th e mid-range on me." Schlachter took the flag wi th three bikelength on Wimmer. and th e two were over 15 seconds ahead of McDonald. From there. it was a long gap back to Head. who had to contend with the late-laps charge of Labrosse. In th e winner's circle, Schlachter was alI grins, and Wimmer was very gracious, saying, "We were very equal, but someone must fin ish first and someone must finish second." • Results 1.
