Industry support appreciated, voter input needed Because of the number of advisory members who annually attend advisory meetings at Los Angeles Trade-Tech . vocational programs are kept current with industry. In 1981 the Motorcycle Advisory Meeting had a record number of members in attend ance. A visitation to the lab where 28 students of a com bined third an d fourth semester class were working brought ou t a recommendation by the members to divide the gro up into two sepa ra te classes. What actua lly moved the ad ministration the most was the donation of 25 Yamaha motorcycles by Yam aha Motor Corp.. U.S.A . an d a very well prepared letter by Bob Davis, owner of Alhambra Honda. Bob Davis compared the learning situation at Trade-Tech to those of Service Schools ta ught by American Honda . Needless to say there was no com parison. Because Bob sent his letter directly to L.A. T rade T ech College President . Mr . Thomas Stevens . Jr., the finding of the entire ad visory mem bers hip im mediately had more impact. Just recent ly Cycle News released the news that Steven Goodspeed has been hired resul ting in a separate third and fourth semester curriculum and indi vidual instructors for each. The onl y threat now to vocat ional educators is a bill before the California Legislature, called Assembly Bill 404 . If passed . it will give all teacher unions in th e state the right to deduct du es out of the wages of non-union members. Most of us who are non -union mem bers at L.A. Trade-Tech resent the union on one major issue. that being the weekly student contact hour load. T he view of the union is that all union employees will have the same load regardless of what is ta ught. As non-union members, we have been un successful negotia ting a freeze on the minimum hour issue. Now the union wants to take our money to bolster their lob bying effort against us and the best int erests of students enrolled in vocational classes. If you liked the recent Cycle N ews story about Bruce Hammer , you'll be interested in knowing that he is a rod uct of vocational edcuation and is a graduate of L.A. Trade-Tech with a major in cabinet-making. I think as taxpayers you recogni ze the fact that there is a different kind of learning between students in a classroom and students in a hands-on la b situa tion. I urge you to write a short letter both to Governor Brown and your California State Sena tor to op pose AB404. Only three points need to be mad e: One , you are a voter; two. you op pose AB404 ; and three, you support vocational education . We at L.A. T rade-T ech appreciate the 14 years of tremendous ind ustry support and enjoy representing this productive and competitive ind ustry and th e hard working taxpayers of th e State of Ca lifornia . Clark R u p p and I disagree with Mr . Iannucci's proposal to allow the inclusion of triples in the Battle of The Tw ins format. While I agree the triples are a uniq ue ma chine to own and the sound they make is music (proverbially) to the ears. the BOTT is jus t that, a race for twins. Let Mr . Iannucci and ex-Dick Man n Rocket III (winner of 1971 Dayton a 200 and feature d in Cycl e Guide) enj oy the exclusivity of his own class of ex-works tri ples. Don 't wate r down wha t has come to be an exciting. new class for spectator an d com petitor alike, Mr. Iannucci has an ex-something or other to race in that class anyway. T he bottom line is. don' t screw with suc cess. By the way, Vint age Ra cing will be ba ck aga in with the AFM folks at th e Six-Hour. W atch Cycle N ews for mo re information . MIC HAEL D. LEWIS Chatsworth. CA Dear U.S. trials fans... If you ha ve seen the results from the first Wo rld Trials in Olo t , Spa in . you know I fin ished ninth. Condi tions were very muddy. an d it rai ned all day . Needless to say, I am qu ite happy about my finish . Afte r I left Placerville, I stopped in Tennessee to see som e friends and was involved in an auto accident during th e frea k cold weather. I reinjured my back and could not rid e for two and a half weeks. I had one and a half weeks to train for th is trial. I feel good now and my on ly problem now is with the Italia n Federation of Motorcyclists (the governing body of all Italian events ). They have dec ided that if a non Italian wishes to ride the Italian Championship , he m ust choose between the World Championship license or the Italian Championship license . As you learned in my interview in issue num ber two, my program for this year was to ride the Italia n and the World roun ds. Italjet has appealed the decision and they (the IFM) have already allowed me to ride Spain so my po ints from that trial will count. I learned today that I can ride Belgium on Feb . 29. but after that I do n't know. Of course , if I continue to score world po ints I will most like ride onl y the Wo rld Champions hip Series, which is a bummer because Italjet had planned on me for the Ita lian Championship . I always d readed the day th a t polit ics would affect me in the sport of trials . and now that da y ha s arrived . Right now, I'm just hoping for the best.
