Grand National Champion Mike J takes us on a track by track tou" 1982 Winston Pro Series By Gary Van Voorhis Horsepower and rid in g ski lls aren 't th e only ingredien ts needed to win a W in sto n Pro N ati on al. You have to have a relia ble bi ke , be ab le to read the track, kn ow th e right chassis setu p, choose th e correct tire com pound and then have the right air pressure and cu t on th e tread . Yo u have to have a li ttle lu ck and a lot of guts -- but first you have to make the starting f ield. What are the 20 rema in in g dirt track N ationa ls lik e' AMA Grand Nat ion al Cham pion M ik e Kid d tells us. Let's take the season, track by track, goes back to th e good o ld da ys in th e and hear your opinions on the things sixties. I wa nt to put m y na me down tha t ma ke the difference between winon th at roster o f winners. ning and being an also-ran. Louisville H alf Mi le. Ascot TT. Louisville is a tra ck where th e crowd The Ascot 'TT is one of th ose events reall y get s behind th e riders and th at wh ere f can 't really figure out why I makes yo u feel lik e yo u 're riding for win there. I won on a 500 in 1980 an d so me th in g more th an just m on ey an d again last yea r. It seems th at if there' s poi nts . You have to stu dy th e tra ck one ra ce where everything falls into closely as it cha nges, and be aware of place this is it. For me, th e key is yo ur chassis and engi ne chara cterisriding the 500, but for others I believe tics so you can make th e bike hook up a 750 is best. Gary Scott is probabl y o n th e lim estone su rface. For th e pas t four o r fi ve yea rs, th e track has been a th e best 750 rider at Ascot. The co nd iti on of th e tra ck -- wet or dry -- mak es blue groov e in th e Nati onal which some differen ce a nd on a dri er course means yo u must get a good sta rt. If th e 500 puts th e power to th e gro u nd yo u ca n ge t a good sta rt and grab th e better an d th at ma kes a ll th e differlead , yo u co u ld wi n th e race a lt ho ugh ence. Watch th e vetera ns, th ey'll hug the Sacramento Mile. pol e -- th at 's a pol ite way of sayi ng Sacramento is a rid ers tra ck -- not j ust you block th e gr oo ve. The key to th e rider wh o will let it a ll hang out, Lou isville is patience. You h ave to but one who ha s go od throttl e co nwait fo r th e rider a h ead of yo u to trol. The track has a san dy, loamy mak e a mista ke. If yo u ho und h im packed su rface that grooves up quickenou gh -- o n a goo\'e th at n arr o w -ly. We'r e running 120·130 miles per h e'll make a mistake a nd yo u h ave to hour down th e straights and probably be read y for it. It' s virtually impossible ave ra gin g near 100 mil es per hour. to pass on th e o u tsi de, yo u 've go t to The track actuall y gets slippery a nd go underneath. You have to run it in th is is wh ere throttle co ntro l co mes deep in th e corners, but n ot so deep in , yo u want to get all the power to th at yo u hang up on th e back tire of the ground. It's a p assing track if yo u the rider in front of you. Interestingly, have horsepower, because you have Louisville is a track wh ere yo u wea r to do your passing at the end of the yo u r front tire as much as the back straights. There is very little passing because yo u' re using it to slow you co m ing off the turns because everydown in the turns. one is hunting for th at last little bit H arrington Half Mil e. of traction. . Harrington is the track of the brave, beca use you 're go ing to have to stuff San Jose Mile. If th ere's a jinx for me it's San J ose. I in u ndernea th someone if you want never seem to come up with the right to pass. If you don't, you'll end up com bination. If four or five riders I believe this is a track which is really brea k away from the pack they're too dangerous to run a Winston Pro going to be hard to catch. If you 're in Series National on. Last year we ran th at pack of four or five then it's a it in the daytime and it grooved up, game of psychological warfare to the rutted upand was dusty. Add the bankfinish. It boils down to who is willing ing and you can see what I mean. to charge into turn three and try to There are plenty of other good tracks break the draft. You have to play that around for a da y event. This year we game for the last five la ps. Track conrun at night and it could be entirely ditions change dramatically from pracdifferent because ' we can probably tice time to the National. You have to groom th e problems out of it. As far be aware of what tire air pressure yo u as banking goes, it takes a lot of nerve to run up h igh because yo u ca n mi swant to run and how yo u want to groove your tire to make it last 25 j udge so easil y just how hard yo u ca n laps. run it into th e turns. It tak es a lot of Asco t Half Mil e nerve to get around a banked oval The half mile at Ascot is a rac e where fast . I never feel comfortable. However , India napolis Mile. I've talked to many other riders and I don 't think th at for th e first Indy Mile th e track is in as good a sha pe as th ey don't feel co mforta ble th ere either. You ca n ' t really charge into it is wh en we co me ba ck a t fair time th e turns and feel relax ed because in August. It seems lik e a tot all y th ere's a wall staring yo u in th e face different ra ce tra ck . It grooves up and it ta kes a lot o f horsepow er and a and the traction at Ascot is better or tal ented rider to win. Passing is easy stronger than any o the r p lace we rid e. a t Indy and th ere's n o n eed to stu ff What you hav e to do is tell yo urself yo u hav e to live with th e feel ing so me body. You ca n let it hang out a you 're going to bail off at an y minute bit a nd not get in to troubl e. Santa Fe T T . because you have to ride so hard. I lik e the DuQuoin Mile alt hough yo u co u ld proba bly say it 's a dangero us track if yo u 're not payi n g attention. It 's rea lly sq uare sha ped. Th e turns a re so lon g yo u have eigh t turns rath er th an four. You make a 90 degree turn , th en stra ig h ten up for abo u t 100 feet a n d th en make another 90 degr ee turn . You 've al so got to be careful ex iting th e turns because you can swing o u t a n d ge t very close to th e wal l. Santa Fe Short Track. The short track at San ta Fe is another jinx for m e. I gre w up being known as a short tracker an d I'v e never won a short track Na tio na l, which is fru strating. Ever ything h as to cli ck for yo u th at night in or der to win. The rider wh o feels comforta ble and has hi s bik e worki ng'good is goi ng to be to ugh to bea t. Local tal ent or those wh o run the trac k's weekly program play spoilers. T hey resurfaced th e track abo ut five years ago and now it's always a hard groove. If yo u want to pass, yo u ma y just have to hold yo ur brea th a nd stu ff somebody to get the m out of the way . Mistak es p laya part , and so meti mes yo u j us t have to wait yo ur tim e. Of co urse, yo u can't wait too lo ng. Peori a T T . T he Peoria Tr is another event where I ca n ' t see m to ge t every th in g workin g. I have trouble wi th th e a p p ro ac h to th e jump and that slows me down so I los e momentum for the tight right and left hand turns th at co me quickl y after the jump. That' s the key because yo u ca n lose a lot of time there and yo u have a hard time making it up . Because of the lon g fro n t st raight, the track favors the 750 ri ders. Stamina p lays a n important rol e in the 25 lap National because we' re usually running in 90 degree temperatures with about the same humidity level. You find out rea l q u ick if you 're in shape. I had an oxygen bottle with me in th e pits last year . Tulsa Half Mile. Tulsa is a typical stock car track. It's big, it's clay and th e straights are so wide you can get lost. The track is coming around and th e promoter is learning how to prepare it for bikes, which is tot all y different from ca rs. It needs to be wat ered more because it drys out and ruts up. It br eaks th e boredom of racing on the other tracks. You ca n pass. The turns are so big th at a rider wi th good thro ttle contro l can start roll in g o n th e gas before the apex a n d have h is spee d up as he 's exiting so he ca n pass co min g off the turn ra the r th an go ing in. In di anapolis Mile. The Saturday night Indy Mile ha s to be m y favorite event. It 's like riding a real fast rol lercoa ster. You go down the straights in to th e turns so deep and so hard tha t it's a little breathtaking. I lik e a cha llenge and the cha llenge at Indy at night is to see how fast yo u ca n go aro u n d th e track . You don' t fin esse the trac k, yo u let it all hang out. It 's on e o f th ose- tracks w here yo u ca n ha ve a lot o f horsepower and th e rider be off an d still win o r have th e rider be really on, but a bit down o n p ow er and win. One can make up for th e other. The raeing is always close. The drafting is
