The I 25cc Pro class was the first
r ace of the da y, with Robbie Nolin
holdin g the lead afte r one lap. A lot of
p ressu re was being p ut on Nolin by
H opwood. In third place was Do n
Turk, Pa t H ub bs fo urth. and Rik
Nielsen fifth.
Halfway through lap three , Turk
slid out, dropping back to sixth behind
Scott Sargent. By lap five Hubbs had
caught up to Hopwood to battle for
second. Hubbs and Hopwood diced
for second till the seventh lap when
Hubbs fell off the pace with a flat tire.
Nielsen moved into third when he
passed Hubbs . Hubbs was then passed
by Sargent for fourth as he slowly faded
back through the pack. Sargent moved
up another position when Nielsen
started having unknown engi ne
trouble and DNF the rest of the day.
When the checkers came out , Nolin
rolled across the line with a comfortable
lead over Hopwood , Sargent and Turk
with Scott Meyer rounding out the top
five .
Nolin blasted his YZ into the lead of
the second moto coming out of turn
one. Hopwood, Hubbs, Tetherton and
Turk followed. Nolin lost the lead to
Hopwood when he went down a
quarter of the way into lap one in a
sharp, muddy turn .
Hopwood was put back into seco nd
wh en he was passed by Hubbs, wh o
flew ha lfway down the downhill into
the lea d .
N olin re mou nted an unsatisfied
sixth but d idn't st ay there lon g as he
passed J oe Merrihew on the third lap
and Turk on t he next for fourth. Nolin
diced with T et hert on for four ha rd
laps before taking over thir d.
When the la ps ran out, it was
Hub bs taking a big win after losing the
air in his re ar sneaker in the first moto.
Hopwood rode a nother strong race for
second , grabbing the overall . Nolin
finis hed third . wish in g he had two
m ore la ps. T etherton was fourth a nd
T u rk fifth .
In the 250s . Woody Ca rlson was
ou t in front , flying off "Devil's Drop ,"
to en d the firs t lap a hea d of Brian
Pitzen, Joaquin Pica zo , Jeff Lucas a nd
Randy Norman . Norman passed
Lucas on th e downhill of the third la p
for fourth . H e then moved into third
behind Pica zo wh en Pitzen fell a t the
bottom of "Devil's Drop. " N orman
moved into second when Pica zo ho led
his pipe and slowly fa de d into the
pack.
Pit zen rem oun ted in the back of the
pack and was soon back into the
ch a rge for the lead. Pitzen ca ught and
passed Lucas by the seventh lap to take
over third. Pitzen diced with Norman
for three laps before moving into
second .
Carlson fin ish ed with a six-second
lead over Pitzen , Norman a nd Lucas.
In
th e second moto, Da vid
Hammond got the holeshot a head of
Pe te Murray , Carlson , Tom Browne
a nd Pitzen. Murray and Carlson both
passed Hammond on the first lap to
mov e in to first and second. Carlson
passed Murray on the third lap for th e
lea d , and Browne passed Hammond
on
the same
lap for
third.
Hammond regained third two laps
la ter when Browne pulled off with
mechanical problems.
Murray haunted Carlson till the
11th lap when he made his move to
take over th e lead. Lucas moved into
third after a three way battle between
Lucas,
Hammond
and
Rodney
Clemens,
riding
in
his
first
Professional race .
Murray opened a sma ll lea d over
Carlson for th e win . Mu rra y went
down at the start of the first rno to but
came back to finish sixth giving him
second overall be hind Carlson. Lucas
was third, H a m mond fourth and
Clemens fif th.

Denton took com m a nd of the first
rnoto while Benavidez struggled to
overcome
assorted
di ffic ulties.
Maloney locked in the number two slot
behind Denton, and Benavidez had to
settle for third place at the checkers.
Round two action was a showcase
for Benavid ez's talents as he powered
to a safe lead by the midway point.
Maloney twisted his previo usly brok en
ankle and dropped from th e race whil e
Denton cruised in to take second place
for th e moto a nd earn the overall win.
Ben avid ez went home with the runnerup share of th e purse, a nd Suzuki rider
Robert Reisinger p icked up third .
Husky rider Bill Keefe and Ma icomounted Ga ry J on es b attled for
su p re macy in 500cc Pro action . Jones
had the track wired in round one as
Kee fe followed in for second pla ce,
and Suzu ki rider Da ve Eropkin
followed n th ird .
Moto two was a t rade-off as Keefe
blas ted to the front position and led to
the checkers, and J on es tra iled in
second . Keefe earned th e overall
victory ahead ofJones and Erop kin .
Ted Bra dy screamed his Hond a 125
to victory in th e one-eighth liter class
despite strong com pe tition from
Yamaha rider Jim Gilson. Brady
lea ped to the fron t in both rnotos whil e
Gilson played ca tch -up. Suzuki -mounted Rik N ielsen p laced t hi rd in round
one behind Brady and Gilson .

Gilson wh ile Ni elsen DNF. Denning
took the chec kers in third place to
cla im thi rd over a ll. and Suzuki rider
