(Fil e photo ) Ashcraft aces Moose Run By Shirley Upp BARSTOW, CA, FEB. 14 The Four Aces M.e. managed a new area and a different kind of race very well. So did Dan Ashcraft (Hus) as Dan took the overall win by only seconds in the timed event. It has been a very long time since the area north of Barstow has seen a motorcycle race . The weather was great and so was the turnout for th e race. By nine o'clock the riders were starting to line up on the starting line, rather anxious for this new course. Larkin Wright was on the line but was so relaxed (so it seemed) tha t it was easy to see he knew his bike was ready . Another rider who was ready to go was Max Eddy . Max had a friend who wanted to go with him, his dog Dusty. Dusty didn 't want to stay behind in this race a nd kept trying to get on th e bike; ma ybe next time Dusty. Dan Ashcraft was having problems trying to decide what bike to ride. First Dan was on a 250cc machine, th en he decided to ride in the Open cla ss, a good move . At 10:00 the race was underway with a row of riders starting every 30 seconds. Howard McCasland on his new Honda, was riding out of Honda West in Santa Monica. Howard took the lead and started to roll on the gas today ! Ashcraft jumped in for second a few miles out with Chuck Stearns (Ho n ) third. The first loop was 45 miles of very fast riding. With no dust the riders were on the throttle and a few got off hard. One of these riders was speedster Mike Sixbery. Mike was running second at the time he went over the bars, landing on his hip and dislocating it. I just talked to Mike and he is already looking forward to the Viewfinders race in April. Mike is in Simi Valley Hospital and would love to hear from any of you down tha t wa y. Our best to you Mike. As the riders came in off of the first loop it was Open rider Stearns in the lead. Another Open rider, Ashcraft, was second. Dan Smith (H us) had moved to third but Dan's ride wasn't to be today and Dan ended up dropping out after second loop. McCasland was runnin g fourth and having problems keeping his bike upright toda . Lee Scheffers came n in through running fifth. Sixth and first 250cc was Cliff Thomas and it was very clear that Cliff had his bike at full throttle. First Open Senior - as usual - was Gary Charters. The race of the day was going on in the 250cc Senior class. Dick Postma and Al Guzman were changing positions about four or five times for the first two loops. Postma not only had Guzman to worry about, Dick had Iorgotton to put his chin strap o nl At the speeds these two hot shoes were going it's a wonder Dick never lost his helmet. Leaving the pits going out on the last loop Postma almost hit Guzman as he was pulling out of his pit. After this, Postma j ustturned on the gas and never saw Guzman again. Cliff Thomas was really having a super ride today, but as luck would have it , Cliff's gas tank came loose and Ashcraft got by him halfway around the last loop . Ashcraft and Stearns were doing some dicing o u t across a valley. Going into a left turn Ashcraft cut in and in doing so he unknowingly cut Stearns off and Stearns went down hard, putting him out of the race. Coming in for a finish it was Open rider Ashcraft with a 12 second timed lead over first 250cc rider Thomas
