The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has released its awards list for 1982. Winning the annual John E. Harley Memorial award was Neil Tolhurst. regional coordinator for the motorcycle safety project at Northern Illinoi s Un iversity. In addition to Tolhurst's work with t he MSF-award-winning NIU prog ram . Tolh urst was cited for his efforts in developing a trail ri di ng training program. writ in g safety article s and serving on t he Illinois State Motorcycle Advisory Council . The U.S . Air For ce Inspedionand Safety Center.Nortt-n Illinois University. the state of Wisconsin. the South Dakota Safety Council and the Motorcycle Operators Instructional Center of Albuqueque,' NM. also won MSF awards. At a press conference introducing their new 125 and 250cc four-stroke singles and their 450 two-speed automatic shaft-drive. Suzuki displayed this 650 Turbo. Designated the XN85 (the 85 stands for horsapower). this particular machine was a European prototype. though it did have a U.S.-raquirad 85 mph speedo. The 650E-based engine features electronic fuel injection. roller bearings. twin dome combustion chambers. oil cooler and a four-into-one pipe. There is also a 5.3-gallon fuel tank. Full Floater rear suspension and anti-dive forks with adjustable preload and anti-stiction bushings keep the wheels (17 inch rear and 16 inch front) on the ground. The chain is fully enclosed. lubed with graase. Release date for the U.S . version is expected to be in a couple months. A request for inclusion of a California-Nevada Desert Trail in the California Statewide Trail System willi be heard and considered at a meeting of the California Recreational . The following (Hon) bested the Novices. The next Series opener at Savannah was rained out and rescheduled to Mar. 8. The racing then moved to Tampa, FL, for a series short track on Feb. 27. Kawasaki rider Lance Jones took the Junior/Expert win, and Mark Hartley (Hon) bested the Novices . The next round of the series, the Feb. 28 half mile at Barberville, FL , fell to Texan T erry Poovey and his XR750 . Rumors of TV roles had added fire to the reports that Pen hall would retire at the end of this year. After meeting with the Morris talent agency.
