Hadlock was out by the second lap , and Blair held first till the end of the mota. Spoof Pena held second for a few laps, but the mud took its toll on his bike, and·hewuoutdthe race.' Dana Waxham ended up with the second after catching up from a poor start. The second mota, Hadlock was the man to beat as he holeshot and took off to win the mota unchallenged. Mike is at home recovering with so me type of nerve problems in his arms. At th e end o f lap o ne, 250 Husk y rider Dale Demaris h ad th e lead with Brad Turn idge hot on hi s tail. At th e en d o f lap two , i t look ed like T urnidge's 495 KTM migh t outru n Demaris on this fast co u rse, but a broken rear brake backing plate kept it in the pits a whil e, giving Demaris a four-minute lead. At th e fini sh it was Demaris with a 3D-second lead ove r Turnidge. People can specu la te as to wha t may have been had th e KTM not broken . Dem aris has had h is share of breakage o ver th e last yea r. and that 's desert racing. Demaris didn 't br eak this time. That's how Demaris won the number one plate for 'BI. When he didn 't break. h e won. Several rookie Experts were in the hunt this race. Barrett Brown, number o ne Open Amateur for 'BI, rode hi s IT 465 to sixth overall and third Open Expert . Mik e Howard (wh o teamed u p with Lyle Klen ski Saturday for six th overall ) was running in the top five until a flat rear tir e destroyed hi s rear wheel. First yea r 125cc Expert Bob Cese na got 15th overa ll and seco nd in cl ass. joe Li euallen, another rookie Expert, go t third in the 200cc Expert class. Turnidge/Wiensz tackle Oregon team race By Larry Ul rich BEND, OR, FEB . 6 February 6 a nd 7 marked th e first points race of the 1982 season for Oregon cross-country ra cers. I say cr o ss-c o u n try ins tea d of desert . because this year's events will be a ll over Oregon. Eight events wi ll be desert a n d three will be west o f the Cascades in th e woods. These two events were sanctioned by th e Oregon Motorcycl e Riders Association a nd sponsored by th e Cascade M.C. of Bend. This two-da y event has become a tradition. a nd th e team rac e is the favorite, as indicated by th e number o f riders. Seventy-six teams (152 riders ) rode Satureday with 91 riders Sunday. One man from each team lined up for a normal desert start, Experts first followed by Am at eurs soon a fter. They rode once around a 22·mile course then had to swap with their teammate. The cou rse was fast but different than last year - more turns. more roc k p iles, more whoops and 10 miles furt her. Each team m ember rode two laps making a total of BB miles. The h igh desert of central Oregon was recovering from a heav y snow fall but wa s free of snow except for a bo u t a quarter of a mile. The ground wa s frozen , however , and made for hard . bone-jarring riding. The su n ca me o u teno ug h to make some mud, and th e temperature was just about right for riding, though a little chill y for pit crews. KTM was th e big winner today. Young Brad Turnidge and desert vet Glenn Wiensz (both past High Desert 100 winners) teamed up to take first overall and first Heavyweight Expert. Not far behind was the Husky team of Dal e Demaris and Tom Lillis fol lowed by Alan Holl y and Grant Hudkins. riding a 250 Honda and a 390 Husky, respectively. In fourth overall ina new clas s was Rick McUne a n d Vogt Lyons in the Over The Hill Gang (o ver 30 years ). This class had a dry run at th e High Desert 100 and wa s so well received that it was made a permanent class for 'B2 with an Expert a n d Am at eur division. Both days this class proved to be very popular. First Am ateur riders were Chris Wood and Stuart MacAskill in 12th overa ll . These riders probabl y sh o uld be rid ing in th e Expert class. In 22nd overall was the team of Scott Zettle a n d Craig Bu chea tak ing first Lightweight Amat eur honors. Results TEAM RACE 1. Brad Tumidge/Gtenn W~n.z : 2. Dale Demeris/Tom Lilli. (Hw Ext 3.
