RIDE AWARE Earle topped both 125cc Pro motos on this muddy , cold da y at Eugene's l\IX on a 1982 Honda that had not been ridden previous to the event. Steve Williams (Herb's/Yarn support) stayed on top of the 250cc Pro heap going I-I also. First race of the day was the 125cc Novice class, at 17 riders by far the largest class of the day. For the first set : of motos, riders were treated to messy conditions. Tim Cooper (Hon) led the pack th ro ug h the water/m ud filled whoops, but when they exi ted, a new leader was in command. J im my Kragness (Eugene SUl ) kep t the peda l to the meta l, but it was h is turn to take a tasty mud sample and turn the race over to Mark Williams (SUl) . From there on in it was Williams' race . The baule for second kept every one awake between Larry Brumwell (H erb' s/ Ya rn) and Greg Schwenn (SUl) , who rode a 1979Suzuki to third a t the flag . . ;\-1010 two had Kragness take co m m a n d over Brian Kragerud (Ya m h ill Yam ), Cooper and Mark Chapman (S u z). Kragnes s and Kragerud were at it with Kragerud coming out on top and taking th e overall over Schwenn with a 4-1 and Schwenn (3-5). . Next race was the Combined Pros race , also running were the 125 and 250cc Intermediates and all the Open bikes to save time and not run out of daylight. Will iams put his 250 out front of 125cc riders Terry Baker (DG / Eugene Suz) and Earle. Earle got by Baker, but it wouldn't be the onl y time tha t they would exchange spots. Rick Gunderson (Eugene Yam), Dway ne Tay lor (Hon of Eugene )and Jeff Toedternier (SUl) led the 125cc Intermediate pack. Gunderson had a good thing going but found conditions greasy a nd lost it to the m ud magnets . Toedtmeir and Taylor moved by and moved up to challenge the Pros. Williams was having a field day up front as Earle and Baker were going at it unt il Baker slid out, a llowing Earle to back off and ride cautiously, although he let Toedtemier and Taylor by in the p rocess. Williams took the checkered flag for first ahead of Toedtemier, Ta ylo r, Earle. Sayles and Baker. The rest were mud victims and packed it in. Second moto had Baker blast the pack. Earle stayed close, and the two stayed gl ued 10 one another for the first two laps. The I25cc Intermediates moved up to join the Pros, but it took them twice as long this moto because the track was much faster and drier then the first rnoro. Up front the Pros were dicing once again. and Baker moved by Earle to take the lead bu t bai led off let ting Earle by. Say les came fro m nowhere to move to within striking distance of Earle. H e wa ited for th e Honda pilot to mak e a mistake, w hic h took th ree more laps then Say les made his shot at takin g the lead . T he two had it ou t for another lap whe n Toedtemier also got by Earle. Earle was now left wi th Taylor, and th e Honda riders pu t on a show for the crowd. It was billed as the Pro versus the should-be- Pro race , and when they came through the woods. Earle was all alone. Taylor bit it big time and said hello to one of the giant oak trees, though not hurt seriously. Sayl es sailed away for the checkered flag ahead of th e Pros and the 250/ Open Intermediates that I failed to tell you about. Dave Beck took command of th e Open class both rnotos but was a long way back from the Pros and 125cc Intermediates. The Pros didn't fare too well this time and more or less took a lickin ' from the Intermediates. The Pros did give it their best shot. but due to the messv conditions, no one has an advantage in this stuff. Next time bring your tire chains, tractor tires or any other reasonable traction devices!
