"This is better than testing in Japan," noted
Suzuki star Brad Lackey after clinching the
number one plate in the seventh and final
round of the Continental Moto-sports Club/
Preston Petty Golden State
Series. America's top GP hopeful went on to add, ' 'I' m glad
Larson was pushing us the
whole series; he made us work hard to
improve the bike, and now we are
more prepared for the Grands Prix."
Hi-Point Honda rider Phil Larson
had a slight mathematical chance of
taking the title in the final race, and
the young Bremerton, WA, rider rode
two strong 500cc Pro motos but had
10 settle for the runner-up slot behind
Lackey.
Coming into the day's event, three
riders had a chance at taking the
250cc title - Honda riders Donnie
Hansen and Jim Gibson and Yama-
ha 's Bob Hannah. Hannah and
Hansen battled in the first mota with
Hannah reaching the checkers first to
accompanying smiles in the Yamaha
camp.
Bad luck struck Hannah in the
second moto when he fell and injured
his ankle forcing him into the pits in
. obvious pain. " Wh en I fell the footpeg hit my ankle," explained a dejected Hannah later in the pits. "It
hurt so bad I knew I couldn't catch
Hansen so I pulled off."
Hansen went on 10 clinch the overall win and the title by placing second
behind teammate Gibson whose
points total edged Hannah from
second place in the series.
