scenario was a throwback to last year, except then it was Barnell making a last-l ap ch arge o n Shultz. As th ey exi ted th e ri gh t-h ander afte r th e big jump, th e checkers wa iting for th em a turn a nd two jumps later, Sh u ltz g ra bbed a big handful in a do-o r-die effo rt. It wa s too much , a nd th e Honda 's rear end p itched sideways.I euing Barnell scoot awa y safely. As Barnell h eaded to the post-race interview with Larry Maiers, Shultz headed toward th e pits .a nd banged his fist on his h andlebars in frustrati on. " I don 't th ink I've ever been so mad a t th e finish of a race," h e ad m i tted later. " I remem ber p assing every body th at made th e main - I think I was dead last, or close to i t, on th e starr-« I passed every g uy o n th e tr ack . a nd I ended up seco nd by two feet ! I ca n ' t stand it. I' d rath er get beat by a lo ng wa ys or so me th ing, but to ca tch h im a nd work th a t hard and lo se th e points and m oney and stu ff.i.geu ing beat, I just hate it , you kn ow?" "I don 't reall y think I pas sed that man y guys tonight; I think a lot o f guys made mistakes and let me by. There wer en 't really th at many places to pass. " As soon a s I got free of traffi c, I could ride m y o wn spe ed , a nd I reeled him (Ba rnell) in pretty good. but ma n. h e j ust pins it w he n yo u get beh ind h im. No m istakes, ei the r, H e's still a rea lly sha rp rid er . reall y o n top of things. I onl y go t right beh in d h im one or two laps from the en d . T h a t's not reall y enough time to set u p a guy like Barnell." Hannah also moved up de spite finding it difficult to pass after a midpack start. He edged Keylon for fourth a short distance behind Gibson on lap 18, each pass commanding the oohs and ahhs of the crowd. Hansen finished a few lengths behind Keylon for sixth followd by Reid, O'Mara, Wosick and Sun. Barnett's ride wasn't entirely trouble-free. " Abou t the 10th lap, a rock got caught in the chain and sprocket and stalled the motor," he reported. "I jumped off 'to, see if my chain came off, but it didn 't come off, so Ijust jurnped on.started it and took off. . "I figured if I co u ld hold him (Shultz) off through the whooops over there, I wouldn't have any problem. I just rode like he wasn't behind me , then I didn't have to worry about it. "I got a slow start, but I still might have a chance to win the series. There's a lot of races left . A lot of guys dropped out tonight, not even qualifying. so anything can happen." Perhaps. Others, naturally, have designs on the championship, too, like Hannah who stated, " I tho ug h t I rode all right, but I feel that I've got a good ch an ce of winning this series. a real good cha n ce. I have plans to win the Supercross series no mailer wh at' it tak es.
