Holtan hauls at
SwanMX
By Lynn Nickerson
TYLER, TX,JAN. 24
Tom H oltan and Todd Young
put aside their 125s for big-bore
machinery as they split rnoto
wins at Swan MX.
Young, now 250 Suzuki-mounted,
showed the class a sneak peek of ab ilit y
on big bikes by winning the first moto
in a nine-lap ba ttle against Honda
480R-mounted Holtan. Todd holeshot
the event followed by Jimmy Booth
(H on ) and Holtan. As the moto wore
on, Young and Holtan's warp drive
riding put them 30 seconds a head of
the pack. Todd had a fla wless ride to
win the race three bikelengths ahead
of Holtan.
The second moto started the same
way , but this time, Holtan dialed the
holeshot pursued by Young and
Booth. Three laps into the ra ce
Young's chance to win was shot down
by an untimely engine seizure. This
allowed Tom to cruise to his first win
on the Open class Honda. Lee
Thompson got second on the tally
sheets. Ka wasak i rider Stua rt McAvoy
went 4-3 for third . After mechanical
gremlins plagued hi s secon d moto
ride, Jimmy Booth was fourth .
With a smaller than normal
Intermediate rider turnout. the 125 ,
250 and Open classes were all
combined. The talent-filled class and
multi-sized bikes were no match for
Rusty Pipes , though . His Suzuki 125
Floater gave more than one 250 and
O.pen rider a shock in his double moto
WIns.
Second place went to Bo Ste~l
aboard his new KX250 . David Smith
was third. Two excellent come-from behind rides gave Hugh Hagan fourth.
