Webb •G'rabs the gold In Prospectors Enduro .By Ed Regehr RED MOUNTAIN , CA , FEB. 7 After a two-month holiday layoff, the new AMA District 37 enduro season kicked off with some real excitement, as Dirt 30 Bike lO'NeallHusky-sponsored Tom Webb edged out ' Spectro/NO I O'NeallJones/KRW IOW G Maicosponsored Grant Palenske for the overall win in the Prospectors Gold Rush Enduro. Webb , riding a 250cc machine and 490 Alpha E-mounted · Palenske tied in the points lost column with six. but when the seconds were totaled, it was Webb with the victory, by a mere 1!l seconds. The second place overall finish earned Grant the Open A win , followed in class by Yamaha-mounted J im Wilson . (10) . and - Can-Am mounted Greg Newland (11). In the 250cc A class, it was Husky mounted Brad Zimmerman moving from the 200cc class. and putting in a fine ride, with a score of 10. Following Brad was Spectro/NO/KRWI Supe r See~.DMG - Maico-s sed, -Gamer 9:20 and headed across Trona Rd . from Charlie's Place on cross-country tra ils at 27 mph. Several miles later, the course swung to the right and headed towards Ridgecrest. As the riders rode up and down the rolling hills in this section, they were able to view Ridgecrest from the tops of the hills . Leaving the rolling hills, the course headed towards Red Mountain on cross-country trails . Bill Fullmer, Jr. was going to ride his old IT175 , but when it was discovered he had a rear fla t, and there was no time to fix it , he switched to his brand new 'S2 IT, and flew to third overall and first 200cc A, with a score of nine . A distant second and third were Jerry Bailey (26) and G. Hiddon (27). Once in the sand hills , the speed average changed to !l6 mph with steep downhills the order of the day in this section. A six mph section at the ridge of the sand hills allowed the riders to get back on time before making another pass through the sandhills. .T he second pass was a very tight trail at !l6 mph. This section emptied in to the rollers at the base of the sand hills. The riders cruised down the pipeline road, crossed the railroad tracks, then headed for the finish on cross-country trails at 42 mph. Only a few riders made it to the finish on time. The riders were very pleased with the job the Prospectors had done, as terrain was excellent, marking was good, and speeds .were fast.
