Controf. Controls are a part of the bike which are often overlooked, yet have a big bearing on the outcome of many races. Ninety.nin'e out of 100 times a throttle cable will ' break in two places-either at the throttle end or by the carburetor. Apply grease liberally inside the throttle assembly where the cable pivots and at the other end where th e cable enters the carbo You 'll assure a longer life and more reliability from the cable. The cable itself should be lubed internally with an yone of a number of items your dealer will have on hand. This process applies to all cables-grease wh erever th ere's a p ivot point, th en lube internall y. Also keep safety in mind wh en working. Make sure th e throttle returns freely and that the bike returns to an idle. Snug up th e pivot bolts on th e cl utch and front brake levers, and don 't be afraid to use Locktite to keep nuts, bolts and screws sn ug on all non-movable parts. When go ing o ver th e eng ine , start o ut by making su re all surfaces are clean. Tiny particles of dirt could lead to big problems if the y get inside yo ur m ot o r during an in spection. One.of th e biggest problems ci ted . in en gin e failure starts with the ba sics, the air filter. Too man y riders leave that item alone. until dirt finds a way past and into the car b and cylinder. ca us i ng seizu re or other problems. Following th e recommendations of each air filt er manufacturer is essentia l, as so me filt er s requir e being wash ed in stra ight gas, o the rs in a ga s/oil mixture. H n ot p roperl y cleaned th e filt er ma y m ak e th e engine run eithe r ri ch or lean. After cleaning and re-oilin g th e filt er with a filt er oil , gr eas e it aro u nd th e edge whi ch makes co ntact with th e airbox, assuring a sea led fit . Befor e reassembling, ch eck th e filter a lo n g its sea ms as a number of washings in gas may separate th e filter where it has been glued. Check th e hose which connects the carburetor 10 the airbox.. The stock clamps which hold the hose on ma y be bottomed out, not su fficien tly sealing the hose. An ordinary hose clamp will work well and make for a good - seal. The tube sho u ld also be grea sed on the inside to catch foreign particles of dirt that may work past th e air filter. The carburetor float bowl should be drained and cleaned. When reassembling, use a bit of silicone seal at the carb top to ward off water and mud. For extra insurance, safety wire the fuel line where it meets the carb and fuel tank . A pulled fuel line in a first turn crash will cost you the race. Many times a rider will remove the exhaust pipe. set it aside, and ignore it when prepping the bike. The pipe needs to be carefully inspected. Check for cracks, as even the most minute o ne could be enough 10 cause aseizure, In most cases cracks can be welded shut and the pipe re-used. Take extra care to check over the pipe if the bike was crashed i n the last race . A slight bend may ha ve pulled the pipe loose from its exhaust mount in the cylinder. Check the D-ring and packing, as an 'a ir lea k there wi ll also cause aseizure. , Don't forget 10 check over the silencer. Many times it will pack up with carbon and other debris, resulting in a loss of power. It doesn 't make sense to have' your engine perfectly. tuned if there isn't a clear flow for exhaust. • Simpson Sports Dept. WA-1 22630 S.
