VohIand victorious over Argyll minis By B.A. Williams DIXON, CA , FEB . 7 Tyson Vohland returned home to do battle with the local boys after his awesome victory over the sou thern Ca lifornia racers' last weekend a t the Anaheim Amateur Supercross. The Argyll Pa rk MX track tod ay was basica lly dusty , hard and extremely fast . All minis were to race toge ther, wit h th e Experts and 'Am a teu rs starting first. As th e gate dropped on moto one, Vohland (Kaw) grabbed t he hol esho t with Phil Sal d iva r (Yarn) and Tony Flores (Yarn) in hor pursuit. Flores passed Sald iva r in t he back section of the track to ta ke over second place. Vohla nd had pulled out a strong lead in the meantime. In th e Am ateu r class, it was Eric Ca valire (Yarn) in first with Ch ris Stewart (Kaw) in secon d . ' Ca valire , having trouble with his fro nt forks, went down , letting Stewa rt take over. Cava lire remou nted only to fall again a sho rt tim e later. He still m anaged to get up and reach the fin ish line in second plac e behind Stewart . T he second moto of the day saw Vohl and lighting the fast green machine into the lead. Flores quickly mo ved into second, but Vohland had already stretched ou t a good lea d. The r ace ended with Vohland first , Flores second and Sald ivar t hi rd. Stewa rt held first in the Amateur race u ntil the last lap when a lapped rider got in his way. Stewart fell, and Ca lavire took the lead and win. Don McGrath (Yam) went 1·1 in the Novice division to bag first in that class for the day. Results 80 EX: 1. Tyson Vohlond IKlwl : 2. Hettinga, Williams haul at sunny Eugene MX By Clay Light EUGENE, O R, FEB . 7 T h e su n a nd riders were ou t in force today . It was th e best da y of racing that Eugene area ri ders have seen for a long, lo n g time. It was eve n dusty which is uncommon during the winter in Oregon . David H e t tinga (Steve's Yam / R W Ra ci ng ) boogied to double moto wins in l25cc Pro, besting Ji mmy Wiant 's tough efforts that bro ug h t him a 2·2 . Steve Williams (Herb's/Yarn support) won an excit- ing 250cc P ro race, winning the seco nd moto over first moto winner Robby Watilo (RW Racing/Yam support). In l25cc Pro moto one, H eninga pulled the holeshot over Ri chard ' Earle (C ycle Country/LOP H on ), Terry Baker (Eugene Suz) and Denn y Fennell (Bell Helmets Yam ). Baker moved by Earle for seco nd , a nd this order h eld for three laps. Wi ant put hi s brand new '82 YZ past Earl e to move into third place and m ov ed up a notch when Bak er ran into troubl e as did Earl e, whose fine ride ca m e to a n abrupt halt when he bailed o rr in th e wood. This left H euinga in front with his hands full (Wia nt). Fennell moved to third and stayed there as Doug Lange (Ya m h ill Yam ), Wayne Church (Va lley C ycles Yam ), Baker a nd Earle were bunched up. Wiant caught up with Heuinga who appeared to be tiring and made his move, but Hettinga, who p laced in the top 20 at the Washougal Nationa l, soon repassed to take the lead ba ck. Fennell's fine ride also came to an end when the 13·year·old slid out on the last lap. Taking the win was Hettinga, followed by Wiant a nd Lange. who wa s right there to take advantage of Fennell 's misfortune. Church also took Fennell for fourth . Moto two ahd Wiant take th e lead over Baker and Lange. Lange and Hettinga were quick to reel in Baker for second and third. A pile-up in turn one took out Fennell and Earle, which left them quite a wa ys back in sixth and seventh. Wiant was all alone out front of the pack, but Hettinga was on the prowl and closed the gap when he finall y got by Lange for second. Heuinga, who was in his fourth moto of the day, began a cha rge which closed him in on leader Wiant. Wiant and Heuinga soon found themselves bar to bar. Hettinga had the drive but came up short when a spectator who had too much to drink got in the way, fo rcing Hettinga to shut off. Heninga madea daring pass which caused spectators to scatter a nd th e wea k o f heart to close their eyes. H eui ng a , once out front: pu lled away from the local speedster and took the checkered £lag for a blitz score ( I- I). Wiant wasn 't far behind each moto and went 2-2 . Third went to Lange with his 3-3. The next best race was the 250cc Pro class. Steve Williams put hi s number one Yamaha into th e lead over Mark" Madman " Freese (Eugen e Suz), Watilo , Skeet Hise (Eas tside Kaw ), Kevin Jansen (Ka w USA /Bea verton Kaw ) and H euinga: Williams o pened up a huge lead that appeared to be a nother no contest, but Watil o was m oving up quite rapidl y a nd di spl aced Freese. Watilo wa s now fac ed with the task of ca tc h in g Willi· a m s, who had built up a fair lead. Back in th e pa ck there was some fierce dicing going o n. Hise crashed letting Jansen by , who had Hettinga and " H o t Rod " Huffman (H u ffma n Wright Logging Suz ) hot on his tail. Watilo moved by Williams with a valiant pass and went on to win. Third went to Jansen who moved past Freese, Hettinga finished fifth , Hise six th and H uff m an seventh. Second time out the track wa s ' beautifu l (except the dust) . Will iams again took the lead and sped away with I:54 la p tim es, w hich bested h is last outi ng's time. H eu inga held down second over Hise, Watilo a nd Huffman. Hise got by Heuinga and went after Williams, but Watilo soon reeled h i m in a nd again was face d with the task of passing Williams.
