Andrews prevents Park Honda sweep By Robert Lisey CANAL FULTON, OH, DEC . 13 Fred Andrews on a 175cc Rick Case Yamaha , prevented a cornplete Honda sweep of the top five places in theFirst of the five race 20 Park Honda SnowShOe ATV Series held at Gran Prix Raceway. Nearly 80 riders gather to contest this hare scrambles event which pits man and machine for 50 minutes against a gruelin~ one and one- half mile track, unpredictable weather, and numerous other ATV racers. Racing began with a 20 minutes scramble featuring five Honda Odysseys. Marv Schlabach, ran an even pace throughout to best the other riders and finish first, a one place improvement over last week . Casey Dutter last week's winner, lost control in a banked tum and the re o suiting crash dropped him to fourth place. Tom Romey took advantage 'a nd moved into second where he eventually finished. Yamahas Phil Wright and Todd Rockstroh, riding Rick Case specials. took first and second to again prevent a Honda sweep . The largest class of . the day . the 200cc division sported 31 riders, An- drew's overall. allowed jim judge to move into first place. Racing was parĀ· ticularly close with the top five racers completing 24 laps to finish within seconds of each other. The field was such that last week's winner , Carl Strouble on a Park Honda , managed only a third behind Honda mounted Dave Caskey and judge. Th~ class also featured a very respectable rider in Helen Saylon on a Honda. She shunned the idea of running a Powder Puff class , preferring to compete on the basis of skill rather than sex. . Honda 250Rs swept the 14 bike class with Rick Schrader copping the gold and Neil Haupt taking the silver. Both Rick and Neil finished on the same lap as Andrews, the overall winner. All three riders put a minum of one lap on the entire field and in most cases lapped riders five and six times. Schrader got a little slower start than Andrews and this cost him time in the early stages of the race , as passing groups of slower riders was tedious at best. Park Honda of Canton, OH is sponĀ· soring another four races to complete this series . Theya re offering an extensive list of prizes to 'the riders in. cluding monogrammed jackets, shirts, gift certificates, and other items. The remaining race dates are jan. 24 and the finale on Feb . 7. Results OVERAll: FnId_lYam!. . ODVSSEY: 1. MarvSchIaboch IHon); 2. Tom Romey CHord; 3. Bob Miller CHon); 4. c.ev DutterlHonl. ' 125: 1. Andrews makes It two Ina row By Robert Usey CANAL FULTON, OH, DEC. 20 For the second consecutive week, Fred Andrews on a Rick Case 175cc Yamaha, took overall honors in the Park Honda ATV SnowShoe series at Gran Prix Raceway. Treacherous winter weather, including 15" temperatures and 10 inches of snow, didn't stop 55 three-wheelers and seven Odyssey riders from gather. ing to compete in the second of the five race series. The ice glazed hills and snow banked turns added to the ex citement in this 50 minute endurance event. Lap times were down considerably due to weather conditions, but Andrews still managed 17 laps on the one and one-half mile course. Mark Doyle on a modified 250R, placed second to Andrews and first in the exotic Modified class. Third overall and first in the 250cc class, fell to Dave Santee also sporting a Honda 250R. Last week's 250cc winner . Rick Schrader, was edged out by mere seconds by Santee but still took fourth overall and second in his class to maintain his series lead in the 250cc class . Mike Resinger on a 400cc Maico, grabbed the holeshot followed closely by Santee and Andrews. The battle among these three lasted several laps before Resinger fell victim as in weeks' past, to a crash with a slower lapped rider. At this point Andrews blasted by and the outcome was never ," in doubt again. Andrews, an excellent motocross and hare scrambles racer. applied his racing expertise and dominated the remainder of the contest. At the final flag Andrews was within one minute of lapping the second place Honda of Santee. Hondas again swept the 200cc class . with Andy Helbig besting 14 other contestants by a full Ia p, and the 250cc class with Santee taking first. Tom Romey completed seven laps in the 20 minute Odyssey contest to edge out Roger Shipman for the gold. This gives Tom 198 points to put him in the lead of the Odyssey class for' the series .
