( " ·H ' Klifg 'teXilf 'i 'b~a'line : out' of 'thrri one, his bike started skipping sideways , and the race was over . Whelchel was too close for comfort, and he went into the lead over the "Honda Himalayas" and was never headed. King easily held onto second with Collins third. Another Kawasaki pilot made the trek from Arizona. Consistent riding and no mistakes ~ve Mark Meredith a 2·3 first overall In the 125cc Expert class. Louie Franco put the only Honda in the field into second overall and Pat Hubbs on a Suzuki was third . Chris Swank led the second moto on a rocket-fast Suzuki but highsided over a jump and moved a haybale 10 feet with his head. Greg Zitterkopf turned his 2-2 finishes in for first overall after battling Scott Cavness and Steve Rawson. Rawson took second on his Kolbe Honda, and Mike Garratt was third after Cavness DNF the second moto. Not all the ladies were in the stands, some were on the track. Lucky for the boys that Mercedes Gonzales raced in the Woman's Division . She was very fast, smooth and professional in her riding style, taking the overall with two moto wins followed by Karen Leitinger and Randi Ehrenberg both on Suzukis . The women on the 250cc bikes didn't look as comfortable with the track as did the 125s. The Pee Wees -for four to eight year-olds - were the biggest crowd pleasers of the day. Ronnie Densford took a convincing win on a super-trick YZinger Yamaha. Second was Yamaha rider Jesse Tewksbury and th ird was Timmy Clatone on a Suzuki. Amazingly, one of the riders had worn out leather pants. How do you ride - enough to wear out leathers by the time you're six or seven? Overall the racing was excellent, and crowd participation was obviously partisan, which is as it should be when you're out to watch the guy down the street duke it out with riders from all over the west. These riders will be back next year to experience the feel of racing like the pros . • Results 51 ~ YR: 1. Ronnie Denolord lYaml: 2. Jeoae Tewsbury lYam);3. TImmy Clatone ISuz). 66 7·11 YR: 1.
