CMC/Preston Petty Golden State Series: Round 4 Hansen wins cliff hanger 250cc race; Lackey, O'Mara continue to roll By Terry Whytal HURON , CA ,JAN. 24 The California State OHV Park at Huron hosted the fourth round of the Continental Mote-sports Club /Preston Petty Golden State 8 Series. With the mercury hovering in the mid - 60s and the sun breaking through the mo rning fog , conditions at trackside were ideal for riders and spectators alike. Suzuki superstar Brad Lackey edged the 500cc Pro class for the third consecutive week despite an increasingly tough challenge from H i-Point sponsored Phil Larson and Wheelsmith Maico rider Kevin Davis . Johnny O'Mara kept his streak of perfect moto wins intact a nd now leads the ser ies 125cc class by a large margin . O 'Mara's Honda teammate, Danny Chandler, tried to steal the Johnny 0 ' Show in the first moto but his production -based bike ultimately proved to be no match for the works machine. The 250c c Pro class continues to provide the closest , most exciting racing of the 1982 series. This week's event once again dazzled a nd amazed the 3000 spectators as Donnie Hansen finally gave Honda their first 250cc win and Bob Hannah had to settle for the runner-up position. Yamaha rid er Fritz Graf had another perfect day in the Vet Expert class . Graf topped both motos with apparent ease whi le Maico rider J im O 'Neal and Alan O lson battled for the number two slot. O'Neal and O lson traded moto finishes and Olson earned the second place overall honors while O 'Neal took third . Sideca rs made their first appearance at the GSS and the crowd response was enthusiastic towards the unusual machines. Ralph Whitney an d Perry Melillo powered to the win on their Norton side hack while b ro thers Tom and Scott Whitney m oto red their Harley-powered machine to second overall ahead of the Yamaha of Tom Ridya rd and Kris Wilcox. Bruce Bunch dominated the 80cc Expert race with back-to -hack moto wins on his Suzuki. Kawasaki rider Paul Denis picked up the second overall placing with a strong 4-3 score while Suzuki-mounted Rick Hemme placed third . SOOcc Pro The first 500cc Pro holes hot fell to Phil Larson with Wheelsmith's Kevin Davis tight on the Honda rider's rear fender. Larson quickly opened a five second lead on Davis as Maico rider Larry Hooper , Honda-mounted Steve Banning and Yamaha pilot Jeff Hicks jockeyed for the number three position. Brad Lackey and KTM ace Joey Schlag both com pleted the first lap in mid -pack but soon were on the move towards the front . Schlag fell and detuned himself to the sidelines b ut Lackey continued to charge and moved into third on lap eight. By the time Lackey moved into third , Larson was a full mi nute ahead of the field and in full control. Da vis held a 30 second lead on Lackey as the moto neared the checkered flag. Lackey made a tremendous charge to close on Davis on the final la p but the determined Maico pilot hung on for second.
