CA,JAN. 9 In what has become -a Corona Raceway tradition, the season opener for flattrack had free entries for sportsmen and the I I I I I I I I I J I I I I I I riders responded with an excellent turnout including a few motocross riders. The Pro rider of the night was Kawasaki factory rider Wayne Rainey who rode three and won three. The first win for Ra iney was the O pen TT but it was Tommy Walton who got the jump on the field with Rai ney and Pete Hames in the second and third slots . Walton held the two at bay for two laps before Rainey was able to get by but Hames wasn 't so luc ky. He looked for th e chink in Walton's armor and ha d to contend with Jeff Johnson who was right on his tail. W al ton made a fatal mistake on the fifth lap and it cost him dea rly as he dropped to second from last and Hames and Johnson mo ved to second and third. Rainey ha d put a lot of d aylight between him and the rest of the field . Hames and Johnson could do no thi ng more than chase him home in the second a nd third spots respectively. The 250cc Money Half Mile was a lot easier for Rainey as he went wire to wire . Don Howard got out first but Rainey made short work of him and had the lead by a tire as they came around the first time. Howard held onto second for eight of the 10 laps when he suddenly dropped to fourth with Jeff Springman going also . Curtis Cannon was more than happy to fill the gap and one lap later Roger Thompson moved by to take over third. Again Rainey had provided himself with a big lead and Cannon and Thompson had to be satisfied with second and third . The third leg of the triple crown was the Open Money Half Mile and again Rainey got a fantastic start and was gone with Hames and Jeff Johnson in hot pursuit. Rainey's smaller Kawasaki had the advantage on the hard packed track and what he gave up in horsepower came back in handling and he had no trouble running away from the Harleys of Hames and Johnson. The big Harleys were in the majority and definitely in the hunt as runnin in fourth and fifth were Harley mounted Danny Perkins and Chris Cannon. They were keeping the pressure on Hames and Johnson. The two veterans kept their coo l and were still in second and third when the checkered fell. Rainey also added the Open Expert II TT to his nights work topping Larry Bird and Randy Monroe. Don Howard pulled the 250cc Money TT out at the last minute. Ra ndy Bird got the lead at the start with Howard in second and Mike Kirby third. On the second lap Roger Thompson slipped by Kirby to take over third and four laps later Curtis Ca nnon did the same thing. W hen the white flag came out Howard made his move and it paid off as he came up with the lead an d the win . Bird was second and Thompson pic ked u p third . The winningest sportsmen of the night was J ason Bell wh o came up with four wins as he captured both Mini classes a nd both 125cc Am/Expert goes.
