TEN YEARS AGO In addition to new and well-received XL250 and 350-4 additions to the lineup, Honda displayed a motorized lawn chair steered with one's feet at the Las Vegas dealer show. Ch ris Hammargren inked a contract with Yamaha to contest the 500cc MX GP wars with T orsten H allman and Jaak van Velthoven. Hakan Anderson remained their lone 250cc contender. Bob Grossi returned to action after an arm injury and topped the Open Expert class at Laguna Seca Cycle Ranch on a brand new '72 five-speed Husky 400 . CZ-mounted Brad Lackey took the Open Experts while Dick Mann and his trusty BSA won 250cc Expert at the Richmond Ramblers M.C. hare scrambles. Ken Habeck, on a Husky 400, edged 125 DKW-mounted Mike McMannus by a minute for the overall win at a cross country race near Bend. OR, contested in sub-freezing weather over snow-covered terrain. Jeff Sexton (Mai) slid to the 500cc Expert win at Perris, CA in the largest 0 -37 TT in more than five years. Other winners included Charles Soderstrom (Bu l, 200cc Expert) ' and Scott Smith (Yam, 125cc Expert). ' John DeSoto (Suz) put together three winning rides for the 500cc Expert gold at Lion's Dragsrrip in Wilmington,CA, besting Maico riders Tim Hart and Bill Payne. Payne won the 250cc Expert class" though. In 125cc Expert competition . Chuck Bowers . (Pen) turned back Dave Rogers (Bul) for the win . Rogers was also second in the 250s. Val Tamietti (Yam) turned in the top 125cc Junior performance. . Bob Sanders and Dan Corbett registered six wins at Trojan Speedway . flat track action in South Gate, CA. Policeman Gene Cannady (Yam) took enough time off from his duties to cop the Pasadena M.C. Holiday Hop hare scrambles, Amateur Mitch Mayes (Hus) got second overall. Third overall and first division two lightweight was Bill Friant (Puc). BOB HANNAH Wins 250cc Pro Class In Round Two Golden State Series, Madera, CA on Hl-Polnt Red Dot Tires. In the 1972 0·37 Heavyweight Desert point standings, J.N. Roberts commanded a 150 point lead over Rich Thorwaldson, 2950-2800. In 175 ~ place was the name Kookie with 204 ~ points followed by 175th place John McCown with 204. Don Emde took a ' new Mel Dinesen Yamaha to the 350cc Senior GP win at an ACA road race at Carlsbad, CA . seventh in the 350cc Junior GP class was Arthur Friedman (Yam) .
