Hi Well , a nother year ha s p ast a nd the ga ng all showed up at the Du nes ready to do battle in the MX wars after more than a one month layoff. Santa must have bee n good to a lot of th e mem bers because m a ny showed up with new '82 models a nd lots of trick accessori es a tta ch ed to th eir two wheelers. Ra in a ll week at the Dunes made track conditions almost perfect. Trac . tion was the best possible at the stadium typ e Int erna tional track . . The firs t race of the day was the Expert class with the gang's new number one p la te ho lder, Stu b by Steve . It wasn 't Steve's day though as Lee Johnson , riding his first ra ce with th e gang , took the holeshot and never look ed back . Roll O ver Rick gav e his best trying to catch Lee . Stubby Steve was b attling for third when he overshot a berm and sunk the Ma ico up to the cases in a mudhole , Moldy Mike rounded ou t th e top three with a good rid e . In the second rnoto Roll O ver Ri ck grabbed the lead and started stretching it ou t until Lee Johnson decid ed he better get rollin" On th e last la p Lee ca ught Rick and passed h im by the stadi u m type over-u nder jump . Lee ended u p with first overall with Roll O ver Rick and Ge t Off Gary ro u nding out t he top three . , Honda -mounted Kwik Keith showed th e Am a teu rs why he was th e n umber one plate ho lder in 198 I as he battled from th e ba ck of th e pa ck to take a seco nd and th ird for th e overall win . Dinky Denny went 4-2 for second overall and Gringo Glen p ut in a great ride for third overall . It was his first trip arou nd with Amateurs after being bumped from the Intermed ia te class. T he second rac e of the day was the Intermediate and Novice classes. Sweet Skeets took th e hol eshot in both In ter med ia te motos a nd posted a 2-1 for first overall, Skeets d idn't have it easy though as Jalapeno Jose and Maico Mike wer e ch a ngi ng positions with him through both motos. Jumpin' Jack borrowed a bike because his new '82 YZ250 Yamaha hadn't reach ed th e dealer's floor yet and rode to a well deserved third in the second moto and fourth overall. The Novi ces blasted out of the gate and put on a good show with Maicomounted Dainty Dan just beating out Drippy Dennis and Bang Bang Bobo for the top brass. VOTE Greenhorn/ Joe Ige Cup Trial C'\I 00 O"l ~ By Bob Morris r--- VALENCIA, CA ,JAN. 10 C'\I The Valley Observed Trials En t husi asts, (VOTE), held the ir a nnu al Gre enhorn Trial ; a regular yea rly event designed mainly for Beginner and Novice class riders. T h is year the event too k on a new d imensi on to VO T E members wh en th e name was ch anged to th e J oe Ige Cu p in hon or of a long time and a lways ha rd working VOTE mem ber who has since mo ved ou t of th e state. Perpetual first place trophies were awarded to th e top Begi nner and Novice riders alon g with equally fine trop hies for them to keep. T his year's even t was held a t Ind ia n Dunes and drew an entry of 65 ride rs. The event , wh ile mainl y a Begi nner , Novice trial had sec tio ns for a ll classes. Sections covered a la rge ra nge of obstacles; deep water , steep ledges, off ca m ber turns with slippery footin g , large blocks of cement stacked toget her to keep the Amateurs and Ex pe rts on their toes . Ther e were nine sections total that all classes rod e with d ifferent lin es of difficulty to cover th e d iffer ent classes. Even though th e number of sections was less than normal wit h a loop tha t measured only five mi les everyone enjoyed the event. Section di ffi cu lty came fro m angle of approach a nd tight tu rns off ca m be r wit h loose foo tin g a nd some ste ep climbs. Joe Ige got ou t early on Su nday and added a co uple of Ex pert sections of his own design. One had the Experts enter the section th e sa me as the lowe r cla sses but inst ead of heading for the exit they m ade a left tu rn to attempt a n a lmos t straigh t u p clim b on loose groun d over rock . T he other ha d them climbing up a nd do wn the face of a sa nd wall with only a ha lf a ha ndleba r width ledge abou t 12 feet up to ride across th e face on . Both were interest ing to wa tch . . T he event kicked off the 1982 trials season in sout hern Californi a and judging from the number of beginner entries th at came out th er e should be a whole new crop of active tri als riders in south ern Ca lifornia tr ia ls. Consistency pays tor Smith at DeAnza By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA,JAN . 10 Suzuki West's, Troy Smith, used two seconds to capture the win in the 250cc Pro class last Sunday at DeAnza Cycle Park, edging out Suzuki of Riverside's Ken Campbell (SUI). Track conditions cou ld n't ha ve been better by the time th e first moto of the e-, 1-0 C'd ::s ~ C'd ~ DeAnza 125cc Nov ice Jay Smith shows some style on his way to third. 250c c Pro clas s got underway. When th e gate d rop ped Bill Pel to grab be d th e ho lesho t in front of Campbell , Sm ith and Dan Pa u lson (Ma i), Bu t it wasn 't long before Campbell h ad ta ke n over the lea d . In the m eantime Smith h ad also managed to slip past Pelto for the second spot. Sm ith 's charge didn' t end there as he sn uck by Campbell a lap later . Campbell wasn 't about to settle for second so he took the lead by passi ng Smit h on the fourt h lap . The two leaders battled throughout the rnot o , but Campbell held on to take the win ju st ahead of Sm ith . Pau lson held on to third while Pel to settled for fourth . At th e sta rt of th e deciding second rnot o it was Suzuki mounted Eddie Michetti who roosted into . the lead with Campbell , Smith and Pelto trailing. Michetti ran away letting Ca mpbell and Smith d uel over second. The battle was' almost a ca rbon copy of th e first moto. O n the last tu rn of the last la p Campbell wen t wid e . Sm ith saw his chance a nd slip ped un dern ea th Camp bell ta ki ng over the seco nd spot. Michetti took t he win whil e Smith fin ished inc hes ahead of Campbell. The overall went to Smith wit h Campbell fini sh ing in secon d . Michetti took th ird for his 5-1 co mbination . In the 125cc Novice class Jo hn Cush ingham gra bbed the first moto ho leshot in fr ont of J immy Palmer (Yam) , Mark W iedeman (SUl) a nd J ay Smith (Yam) . Cushingh am 's lea d only lasted a 'few la ps, endi ng when Palmer snuck by on the fourth lap . Cushingharn managed to kee p Pa lmer in sigh t bu t that was about a ll. Palmer went on to take the win Cushin gham and followed by Wi edeman. i t was Palmer who grabbed the early advantage at the sta rt of t he seco nd moto wh ile Wi edeman and Cushingham foll owed. W iedeman held ba ck Cushi ngham for ha lf th e race bu t gav e in wh en he fell , handing second spo t over to Cushi ngha m . Pa lm er took an easy victory with Cush ingh am in second . Smith held onto thi rd . Steve N ess (Suz) captured the win in the 125cc Beginner class a fter laboring his way to a 1-3 sco re . Following behind Ness was Darren Da ley who took his Suzu ki to a 4 -1 overa ll. Rou nding ou t the top three was anot her Suzuki mounted rider, Ala n Hu rwit wh o talli ed a 2-4 score. . Racing returns to Corona By Kit Palmer CORO NA , CA , J AN . 8 Motocross action resumed at Corona Racewa y after a two week vacation during the holiday season , Starting off the new-year in style was the victorious H igh School of Redlands edging out the win in fron t of Esperanza , 165 -148 . With 71 points added to the ir credi t Upla nd held on to th ird only seven po ints a head of Cerritos. Paul Herman of Redlands took command of the 125cc Intermedi a te cla ss a nd swep t both motos ahead of two Esperanza riders , D. Dunlap (Suz) ; and Ed J oh nson (Suz) , Herman gra b bed t he holeshot in the first moto leav in g Dunlap and Johnson to duel over second. Johnson slipped past Dunlap before the second lap, and held th is position until the final la p 31 .'
