O wn ers 'Norma n a nd Rocky Fr en ch have extended two sides of the old Austin MX Park , doubling its size . T he track rec eived noth ing but compliments from both newcomers and native Austinites who remembered how th e track had bee n before the renovation . The big story on th e morning side of the split schedule came in th e first race of the combined 100 and 125cc Novice classes. Eddie Snider grabbed the hole shot on his Suzuki 125 . But coming out of the second tum , Mik e Munay on a Yamaha 100 led the pack. Some fine ridi n~ helped Munay keep his lead the remainder of the race , leaving the rest of the field wondering if he fed his bike Wheaties that morning. . The first race in th e 250cc Novice class was dominated by Deney Elsik , who blew the others awa y on his Yamaha . An early pile-up in the second heat revented even a show finish for Elsik, lea ving h im third over all . It was a dry afternoo n . but the wind kept the dust from ho veri ng over the track. T he m ai n obstacle for the Intermediate a nd Expert class riders was the roughness of some parts of the track, aggravated by decreasing visibility as the su n set. Several riders were . bounced around q u ite thoroughly , some leaving the tra ck , giving the fleeing spectators their daily exe rcise. In the Open In term ed ia te class, San Antonio's Ronald Schwar ck had trouble keeping the lea d on his Suzu ki. In the first heat, Schwarck jumped to an early lead, b ut by th e end of th e firs t lap, he had been passe d by #59 Steve Ca ldw ell of Austin . By the end of the race , Schwa rck ha d fall en be hi nd Bill Dorn on his Husky . Sch wa rck grabbed th e lead again in the second heat , followed by Dorn and Ca ldwell , a ll in tight formati on . But Schwarck traded positions with Cald well, who stretched out his lead , shrivel ing Schwa rck's chances for a com eback. T he seco nd hea t ended up with the leaders in th e sa me positions as in th e first hea t - Cald well , Dorn a nd Schwarck . Rick Blackwell a nd Houston's Dan Conway were the m ain contenders in th e 250cc Expert class . Eager racers piled up at th e start of the first heat , and the race was black-flagged and re o sta rted . Blackwell got the holeshot on the second start on his Yamaha and held the lead, although Conway's Kawa saki was dangerously close. Blackwell took an early lead again in the second heat , but Conway was determined to take it away and kep.t right on Black well's tail. Bot h bikers held their wrists down and soon left the rest of the field behind. Conway .stole the lead in the backstretch a nd came over the hill ahead of Blackwell, who was not able to recapture the lead . Jerry Farmer battled out a distant third . T he first heat of the .O pen Expert class belonged to Steve Stackable . T he race sho wcas ed the style and talent that ea rned Stackable h is ren own. San Antonio's David Stutts got th e holeshot in the second race, with Stacka ble right behind , both on Yamahas. Accidents plagued th e ra ce . Glase r eased into first pu tting Conw ay, Bucsa nyi and Ne iheiser behind him . After making the first pass of th e tricky double jumps, Glaser and Conway cleared them and quickly pulled away from the others. A mucky battle co ntinued as Glaser and Conway slopped their way through the track. On the third la p , Glaser got messed up after the double jum ps letting Conway take over th e lead. Glaser got up and going hurriedly and con tinued in second as Bu csanyi was still holding on in th ird whi le Bill Sparks had come up to fourth, Conway pressed on in first while get ting into lapped riders on the fifth lap and almost centerpunched a rider stopped in the middle of a comer. Glaser had made a superb effort to come up close to Conway by th e end of the race and proved he had the winning spirit as he led off the line in moto two putting Conway behind him. Bucsanyi and Joe Fri tz (a new comer from Ohio) were behind them till Bu csanyi go t stuck in the first com er and stall ed , endi ng u p last. O n the second la p Conway went down in a tight left turn as all th e other riders passed him, for th e m uc k ac ted like a suction cu p a nd made it hard for him to get up . Glase r led half a lap ahea d of him by the time Con way was up right again. Fri tz was still in second as John Rollo and Bill Sparks coax ed hi m to lose his concent ra tion . Co nway was practicing his best pass ing feats to com e up in the ra nks. • Glaser co ntinued to be proficient around the comers , ga ining ground on Rollo , who passed Fritz. Rollo soon ha d to con ten d with "Dynam ite" Dan who at tempted to pass hi m on the up· hill , but Rollo sai d no way, and his Ya maha pulled Co nway badly. The double jumps proved Conway's abilities as he soared by and claimed second place. Rollo fell soon afterward and stalled it in the second comer while Glaser had first place all wound up. Another promising rider, Richie Hull, had a fine ride in the combined Mini Junior and Senior class by taking the holeshot awa y from second place Blake Garland . Rounding the first tight comer, it was David Cochran, Garland and Peter Gunderson all behi nd Hull. A la p later, Gunderson go t by Garland. Hull styled over the jum ps with a trem en do us lead on Cochran who ended up only three seconds ahead of Gunderson. Hull was ou t fr ont again at the start of the second moto , Garland , Gunderson and Cochran trailing. Hull pulled away from them and cleared the double jumps as easily as the Experts did (very few riders attempted the act). . On the third lap , Gunderson fell while leading Cochran who tried to get around him and lost his concentration and high sided. He got up and going before Gunderson and finished third; Garland was second and Gunderson fourth . • Results _ . Rio MXwin 80: 1. Shawn Cool<; 2. J"""'" Fuller; 3. Gerold _ . MINI JRlSR: 1.
