Santee takes inaugural Gran Prix Hare Scrambles By Robert Lisey CANAL FULTON , OH , DEC. 6 Dav e Santee, on a 250 R Hond a , bested 45 other three-w heelers to win the inaugural Gran Prix Hare Scrambles run for ATVs. Id eal weather and a perfect track greet ed th e mostly Novice ra ce cro wd to this d ynamic fast growing spo rt of ATV raci ng . These buggies were thrilling as they flew off jumps and ran wide -op en thru banked corner s. Running a co nse rva tive ra ce , Cas ey Dutteer , sa ved both his bod y a nd his machine needless punishment as he led from ga te to finish . Ed Stein ssing hard until he ba cher was pre co llided in a banked co rner and performed a perfect 360 0 endo (wh ich t he cro wd loved ). Alm ost 50 % of th e ent ries co ntested the 200 cc class . but it was Carl Strouble who proved eq ua l to the cha llenge as he fin ished first in his cl ass and third overa ll. Every on e was a nxious to sec how Mike's custo m m ount would fare against the Honda "red tide." "I was rea lly bummed . It wasn't even a part we m odifi ed tha t broke. I'll have it ready for next week t ho ug h. " Mike promised .. " Parris sizzles flat track races at Southways Race Park By Maureen Daspit Daniels PICAYUNE, MS , NOV. 28 The two-stroke Go-Kart class, in cluding two hop ped up four strokes, was the la rgest fla t track class at Southw ays, crea ting m uch excitement for spectator viewing. Eugene Parris of Abbeville, LA , was the overall winner of the night. In the first hea t , Randy Hammonds grabbed the lead , followed by Pa rris. On the fourth lap , Parris and Troy Schultz collided after changing posi tions for three laps. Schultz had to pull out while Parris went on to recover lost ground in a hurry. On the sixth lap , Hammonds had mechanical problems. Richard Briggs, on his screaming four stroke , overtook the lead, with Parris in second. Hammonds repaired his machine . getting back into competition on the seventh lap. Briggs finished the heat for the win with Parris second , followed by Hammonds and Robert Wood. In the second heat, Hammonds once again claimed the winning spot. Parris passed Wood on the second lap to challenge Hammonds. The checkered flag found Parris in first , Hammonds sec ond , followed by Wood and Briggs. Parris, Wood, a nd Briggs were the only riders who lined their karts u p for the final heat . All of the other ri ders had mechanical fail ure. Pa rris took the lead from the beginning where he remained the entire heat. Wood held second until he was passed by Briggs on the last lap . With hunting season in full swing we missed several of our regular threewheeler riders Saturday night. In the 131-220 cc class there were only three entries, however, it was an exciting race. Berry Patterson finished first all three heats , while Bill Polk and John Hill were tied for second ending the second hea t. Breaking the tie in the final heat was Hill , giving him the ove rall seco nd . In the Powder Puff class, Dianne Polk and Cindy Yates, along with Mona Hill competed heavily on stock 185s and 200s. These ladies handled th ese tough machines very well . Polk was th e overall winner of the class followed by Yates a nd Hill. In the 0-130cc Modified class , the Pumilia brothers were victorious once again. Claude trophied first , while Paul brought home second. Charles Formby trophied third, after a tough battle from Rick Bolling . Flat track races for two , three and fo ur.wheeled machines will be held every Saturday night at Southways R ace Park .
