Saddleback Pa rk had just built a new ATV track bu t was u nable to run on it due to t he fa ct tha t t hey had so many events happen ing , th e three-wheeler s ended up running on the off-road cou rse . CMC is a lso running their event on the levels of Junior . Intermediate , and Expert , with today's biggest cla ss being in the 250c c Exp erts. T he first ra ce was a co m binat ion of th e 110 , 200 Jr. and th e 200c c Intermed iates. As the nag dropped , Lonnie Oroso riding a Premier Yamaha wa ter-cooled 175cc blasted away first . Or05O, however, didn't waste any time putting distance between him self and second place John Neary . Oroso's 1-I score gave him th e overall with Neary's 2-2 fin ish for second in the 200cc Intermediate. The 200 cc Juniors Da le Little and Scott Gavley battled in both motos, but in the end it was Ga vley get ting the nod with a 1·1 finish , with Little putting in a 2·2 score for second overall. CMC kicks off Golden State mud-o-cross By Lance Bryson IR VINE , CA . JAN . 3 Team Honda's Dean Sundahl put in a 1-1 score to out ride the 250cc Expert class in the first running of the Continental Motorsport Club Golden State Series at Saddleback Park. The 200 cc Expert class proved to be an outstanding battle between Hond a 's Tom Ga ia n a nd Curt is Sparks . In the first heat Ga ia n (Ho n) jumped out in fro nt followed closely by Sparks (Hon ) with Ma rt y Ha rt (Ya m) from Lou isiana , now a 3· B Lightning team me mber , . following Ha rt was Ti m Hoy (Hon) . Sparks see med to be havin g trouble in severa l of th e turns, as it tu rn ed out th e bik e was two in ch es short er tha n stoc k. " I had tr ouble arou nd th e whole track . W.. were tryin g a few th ings d ifferent , a nd as you saw it d idn 't work well, " co rnment ed Sparks. Hart on t he other ha nd looked like he was havi ng handling problems a nd sta rt ed to dro p back on his 125cc. " I felt fu nny sitti ng on the line , someth ing just did n't feel right. I started ch ecki ng out the bike when I noticed a crack in th e fr ame, by that time the n ag drop ped so I went for it. The second heat saw Sparks j um p out first follow ed by Ga ian, Ga ian made several moves to get by but the mud took its toll on his goggles, and was forced to take a back seat finish. Spark's 2-1 score was good enough for the overall with Gaian's 1-2 finish good for second. Hoy's wide open style landed him third. . Bob Briggs (Hon) put in an outstanding rid e to land a 1·1 score in the 250cc Jr. class . Glen Elliott (Hon) and Kevin Lee Harvard , traded off second place fini shes but it was Elliott nailing down th e second place with Harvard's 4-2 sco re good enough for third . All of these riders were flying and th e -way they looked . it should be no tim e before th ey mo ve up to Intermediate . The 250cc Intermed ia te class had mud flying everywhe re . George Ferrie (Ho n), Ga ry .Mend er (Hon), along with Rob bie Lee who h as j ust stepped up to the big boy class on a Honda a nd Mike T a rter (Hon), had thei r t hro ttles twis ted . In the first hea t Ferr ie j um ped out in fro nt followed q uic kly by Menefer with Lee and Tarter following closel y behind . Ferrie has got to ha ve one of the most W FO styles I' ve ever seen. Memefer . on the other hand was smooth and in co ntrol. The mud however, played a major part in th is heat as Men efer got roosted with mud in th e face a nd was never really a threa t for first. The second heat was different. Menefer and Ferrie put on a heck of a show with their side by side battling. Lee seemed to be lurking in the background just wa iting for the right. moment. W ith three laps left, Ferrie made a mistake when he got into the mud and slowed him down. Menefer went ton to win , also the overall. Lee followed in for second a nd Ferrie's wide open style was enoug h to salvage third. Honda's Dean Sundahl put on a crowd pleaser race to na il down the top spot in t he 250cc Expert class. The
