Today's Christmas race was unbelievably muddy. W e had thought tha t the last race two weeks ago was muddy, but this put the icing on th e ca ke. Wayne Church sloshed to soggy 125cc Pro clas s wins , wh ich had to run in the heaviest of downpours. In 125cc Pro/Intermediate moto one. Richa rd Earle (Cycle Country Hon ) put his Pro-Link into a hol esh ot a nd hooked it up to lea d into the straightaway. Lonny Sayles (Yam) was in second (first Intermediate) followed by Jeff Toedtmeier (Suz), J im Kragness (Suz) and Doug Boddy (Yam) . . Pros Wayne Church (Ya m) and Rod ney Keller (Eugene Su z) were caught in the pa ck . lett ing Earle p ull away from his Pro rivals. However. Sayles got by Earle to take o,ver for th e lead , as Church moved from 10th to fifth behind Sa yles, Earle , Toedtmeier and Boddy. Earle attempted to put a block pass on Sayles to retake the lead , but his plan backfired . and he ended up ta king a slop sample , sliding down the h ill on his ta il en d and letting Church get by to put pressure on . the Intermediate leader. Earle remounted quickly enough to go into fourth, stuck behind two fast Intermediates. Church. once out front , seemed to be enjoying himself in the muck and took the win over Sa yles. Toedtmeier, Earle and Doug Boddy. In moto two , Boddy shot out of the gate over Sa yles. Toedtrneier, Earle. Church and Kragness. Boddy. who has been improving lately, had a huge lead as the Pros were being showered with a soupy roost. Earle was plagued with eyes swollen from mud , but he still held it on pulling away from Church. Church was on th e move and moved up on Earle when he was devou red by an ocean of water. Earle was back on the gas and having a terrific battle with Sayles a nd Toedtrneier. By the half, Church got by Bodd y for the lead and that's a ll there was to the race ex cept for the fight Earle was having with the fa st paced Int erm edia tes . Boddy took second , Earle third and Toedtrneier fourth . In 250cc Pro ra cing. it was Steve Williams (Yam support) who took command over Rodney Keller (Eugene Suz /Mai ). who is new to the 250cc class. The 250s were circulating at the fastest lap times (2: 13) with Keller moving quite rapidly . but he had some problems staying upright and fell to earth more than a few times. Williams was long gone and took the win over Keller. Second mudo had Keller put his Mega Two into the lead , but that didn't last too long as Williams. one of the best mud riders in Oregon. went by and pulled away from " Rad ical Rod ney." Keller crashed which didn't help his chances of catching Williams. who ended up taking the win and the overall with a 1· 1. In Open Novice racing, Vic Chu rch (Valley Cycles /Yam) ca me up on top . Ch u rch . father of Pro Wayne Church . had a b attle with Da vid Aleckson (Ya m) who won the first mot o over Nationally-rated fla t tracker Tom McCu llough (Hon) who sty led through the corners. Church won moto two to take the overa ll win . Hopefully . by th e next race on J a nu a ry 17, the weather will be more pleasant! Results 125 PRO: 1. Wayne Church (Yam) ; 2. Richard Earle (Hon); 3. T he highlight of the eve nig was the 250cc Pro main wh ich requ ired a two row st art, make tha t a th ree row sta rt . since so many riders were on th e penalty grid . Only Oliv er was in th e front row! Ol iver used it to his advan tage and shot out front of th e pa ck of nine riders . Hurst moved quick ly into second - he was one of th e lu cky three that wer e on row two - and Word (p enalt y a rea again) moved by a pa ck of four to garner thi rd . Oliver held steady, keeping Hurst at ba y. The two wer e a t it tooth and na il; Hurst could n't get by and soon had Word to co nte nd with .
