The two riders wer e just inches apart on some sections of th e tr ack and Reid slipped past Hansen briefly on lap II but Hansen repassed quickly. Hansen misread th e on e lap flag and Reid regained t hi rd place with Hansen holding fourth at th e checkers. Further ba ck , a fine race developed between Mike Bell a nd Kawasaki riders Jeff Ward a nd Goat Breker. Ward eventua lly edged past Bell to ta ke fifth . Honda rid er Larry Wosick beserked th e final th ree laps a nd passed Breker and Bell to fin ish sixt h . 125cc Pro J ohnny O 'Mara timed th e gate perfectly at the start of th e 125cc Pro final and his bri ght red factory Honda led by two b ikelen gths as the pa ck cres ted th e sta rt hil l. Honda rider Danny " Magoo" Chandler made a da ri ng insi de move co mi ng do wn Banzai H ill to move into second. At th e end of th e first lap th e ord er was O 'M ara , Chandler , Suzuki rider Ga ry Denton , Honda -mounted Ron Turner , Suzuki 's George H olland , and Ga ry Dir cks on a Suzuk i. O'Mara wast ed little time in pulling away from th e pack , h is lap times just slight ly off the pace set by Hannah in the 250cc race . The race for second p lace was fier cely contested and places changed continuously throughout the moto , Chandler fell , remounted quickl y but apparently was dazed and Holland took over second. Holland also fell a few laps later a nd dropped to seventh , Suzuki rid er Rick Ryan joined the battle for second as Denton faded and Turner a nd Chandler replayed a sce ne fro m las t years GSS: pass and repass , Chandler fin all y sett led the d isp ut a nd cr ossed the fin ish lin e in seco nd .
