CMC/Petty Golden State Series: Round 2 O'Mara and Hannah continue at Madera, Lackey tops 500s By Terry Whytal MADERA, CA,JAN. 10 The Continental Moto-sports Club Rolling Thunder Review continued to pick up momentum as the Preston Petty Golden State Series crashed through the sleepy central California 8 town of Madera for the secon d round of t he seven r a c e ser ies. Honda /H i-Point nder ,?anny C~andler kept the pressure on 0 Mara with another runnerĀ·up placing while Hannah had to contend ~ with a blazingly fast Darrell Shultz , riding his first- race for the Honda factory . wanted to be closer near" the finis h so I co u ld make m y m ove . re counted Suz uki star Bra d Lackey after Team Yamaha rider Mike Bell edged him out in race one of the 500cc battle . "The white flag surprised me." Lackey charged back in the second rnoto to finish first as Bel l pulled into the pits near the halfway point with a twis ted knee. Bu zz Presser dominated the Ve teran ':1 Masters class by winning both motos despite strong competition from Yamaha rider Terry Sage. Sage followed Presser's H usky ac ross the finish line in each moto a nd Maico rider Terry DeKay finish ed a close third. The Old Timers Master ra ce had a bit more suspense as the first moto winner , Husky-mounted Gene Hrubsky, dropped to seven th in the second round and Maico rider Marvin Olson picked u p the overall vict o ry . Jim Ho lmes piloted his Maico to second ove rall wit h H r u bsky end ing the day wit h a third . 125cc Pro Honda rider Danny "Magoo" Chandler grabbed the first 125cc Pro holeshot with Yamaha support rider Ron Lechien glued to his rear fender. Chandler and Lechien traded the lead back and forth for the ne xt two la ps u ntil Chandler threw it away' and re o _ mounted back in fifth. Honda's Johnny O 'Ma ra , La Habra Yamaha rider Mike Beier a nd Suzuki's George H oll and b attl ed for the n umber two position until O 'Ma ra broke free to chase Lechien and Erik Kehoe moved his Yamaha past Beier and Holland . With O 'Ma ra pushing Lechien the two leaders began to outdistance the field. Chandler charged back into the fray and moved into third as Kehoe a nd Beier both faded wit h a p pare nt m ech anical problem s. O' Mara wa ited 'til rn oto' s end to slas h past Le ch ien and take the win . C ha ndler fin ishe d third, Holland fo urth and Suz uki rider Chris H eisser rou nded out the top five . Beier grabbed the second moto hole shot but Ke hoe powered past at the end of th e front straight and Beier crashed out after tangling with another rider.
