It was a three row start, and the big bikes were first to t he water jump. The first wave of bikes literally swept over the jump in a pack. It was only half a mile from the start and Pete Snorteland had not yet begun to extend this early lead he and his Pro Support Yamaha were enjoying . Jim Coffey was second on a Burbank Yamaha , followed by a fraction of a second by Honda -mounted Ken Zahrt and Doug Taft on another Yamaha. There was monumental confusion in the 250cc ranks as one of the early leaders had a moment of doubt and pain at the top of the jump and lost the momentum necessary to clear the water. There was no question on the identity of the l25cc leader in the first lap or Olny other lap. It was the "0 ," Johnny O'Mara. He was far ahead of the pack when he flashed over the jump. American Honda teammate Brian Myerseough had disentangled himself from the pack and took on the formidable task of catching O'Mara , Snorteland had extended his lead over th'e Open bikes to 20 seconds by the second lap with Coffey and Zahrt still in second and third . Eric Mac Cracken had moved to fourth and was trying to close on Zahrt , Rod Richardson had come up in the lead of the 250s with John Whelchel already beginning to make a bid for first. Whelchel was shadowed by John Biffle and Trace Willis . O 'Mara was already working his way through the ranks of the 250s. MacCracken got by Zahrt before lap three and was joined by Bob Schulz in the quest for the lead. Within two more laps, O'Mara had passed all the 250s except Whelchel and was chewing away on the open bikes . Myerscough was picking up a bout two seconds per lap on O 'Mara. MacCracken and Schulz came around in the lead overall about midway through the race with Zahrt hanging onto third. O'Mara finally passed Whelchel and set out after the Open class leaders. His strategy was simple; he wanted the overall. Schulz got by MacCracken and soon after Mac fell victim one more time to the GP gremlins and came up DNF. Coffey moved up and around Zahrt to take second. Whelchel remained in the lead of the 250s. With three laps to go , the Open leaders suddenly had a problem . O 'Mara and new Myerscough were making themselves definitely annoying by blithely passing the big bores the same way they passed the Europeans. They both moved into first and second overall at the beginning of the last lap and Myerscough was now close enough to O 'Mara to take a shot at him . Sometimes a feller jest cain't get no respect , even from a teammate. That last lap was a blinder right to the wire , with O 'Mara winning by a nose. Schulz took the open win and Whelchel got the 250cc money. Results 60 NOV: 1. Jason Collier (Yam); 2. Joel Tokapsky IVaml. 60 INT: 1. Shane Hunt (Varni . 80 BEG: 1. Jeff Mabery IKawl: 2.
